Two Shadows
By Alicia Becton

"Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I
shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever." (Psalm 23:6) This was a theme
verse of mine for a few months so I want to share a couple thoughts from it.
The 23rd Psalm is so well known that some of the true wisdom in it
becomes easily overlooked. It is a wonderful promise that no matter where I go
or what I do, I have two shadows with me: goodness and mercy. Goodness is there
to take care of my steps, and mercy is there to take care of my stumbles. Jesus,
in dealing with Satan’s temptations, said ‘get thee behind me Satan’. We
can say this as well, but Satan not only has to get behind us – he has to get
in line behind goodness and mercy because they are already behind us.
Many times it is not wise to look back and we certainly should not dwell on
past mistakes. However, if we make a mistake and have to turn around to get back
on track, we have our two shadows in front of us, leading us back to the right
path. Once we are facing the right direction again, goodness and mercy can take
their place behind us again. I don’t want to take for granted God’s goodness
and mercy on my life.
Surely. Without a doubt. Me and my two shadows.
