“I’ll Take the Spouse Behind Door Number 3,
Monty!”

When we were
compiling our survey, this was one of our “must use” questions. Because
it somehow encapsulates the disenchanted mindset of almost everyone looking for
Mr. or Miss Right, this was my favorite response: “I
think there is one out there for me. But not in my state.” There’s always
someone in the next state¾there has to be!
The problem, as the
surveys indicates, is that 58% of the males and 63% of the females all see the
anemic mate pool in their area as a serious issue. Why a majority of both
genders remain unhappy with their possible candidates is better pondered by a
generation of philosophers and psychologists than this humble survey.
What was a bit of a
surprise, were the accompanying comments. The most obvious complaint, that
Apostolic women outnumber men (one claimed a 7-to-1 ratio at her church),
littered the responses.
“The
tendency for as many females to consider there aren't many mates available as
males consider there are mates available is interesting,” one youth
leader said. “A trip to most youth camps reveals the ladies may be onto something.
The "Apostolic Convent" philosophy never dies.”
Still,
there were other problems afoot that need immediate addressing. While several
respondents admitted that their personal standards were high and narrow, some
females complained that non-Apostolic males treated them with greater respect
than Apostolics. If true, it is a blight on our youth that purity and godliness
are disrespected instead of honored.
Some
females complained that their personal pursuit of excellence alone, especially
in higher education, seemed to disqualify them from consideration. That a
college degree would intimidate their masculine counterparts makes one wonder if
these men have taken the scripture to heart: “Iron
sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.”
(Proverb 27:17) Nowhere is that more true than marriage.
One
male complained that “Apostolics are getting married
so young, that the good, solid ones of wife material, are often taken early,”
while other respondents mentioned a dwindling pool of candidates as their
age increased. Neither are wrong. Solving both is another issue entirely.
Ultimately, it still
boils down to everyone’s underlying hope of finding that perfect reflection in
life¾Jacob’s
Rachel, Ruth’s Boaz, or Ahab’s Jezebel (Hey, the reflection isn’t always
pretty.)
To that, the only
light we can shed is this fact¾don’t
give up because there sure are a lot of Apostolics looking.
