Communion
Between Light and Darkness on Friday Nights

These answers fell
into two categories, the scripture quoters and the experimenters. Without fail,
answer after answer after answer used Paul’s admonition, “Be
ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath
righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with
darkness?” (II Corinthians 6:14)
The experimenters
ranged from the casual (“It depends on the woman.”) to
the careful (“Maybe if they were a Christian, though I never have yet.”) to
the cavalier (“Yep, cuz
there was no one in church I liked.”). Whether these sentiments were the
expression of a moment or of engrained philosophy went unexplained.
This
caused some concern among our commentators. “I'm
very surprised one out of three church-goers would admit dating outside the
church is tolerable. It makes me
wonder if they speak from experience or from the desire for the forbidden,”
one youth leader admitted. “Beyond the biblical obedience issue, relationships
have enough adjustments that are necessary, to then deal with the more global
issue of faith.”
Like the answers
about premarital sex, these answers also contained its own angle on mistake and
heartbreak, with some respondents indicating far more with quick comments than a
page of stories could tell.
Still, no one lacked
for honesty. You don’t need a scriptural basis to understand one perplexed
respondent who wrote: “I had enough
problems with Apostolic girls. Why should I double my problems?”
