A
More Melodious Tune

Society’s
“discussion” about premarital sex today seems to be endless reiterations of
the same thought¾it
is a rite of passage for teenagers and no longer an issue. Let’s face it,
losing one’s virginity is a regular storyline in the popular media, especially
movies. Social commentators discuss “safety” and “public health”
problems, but rarely delve into the diminishment of self-respect and high
personal standards.
Still, despite
society’s one-note song to the monotone beat of personal pleasure, Apostolics
are more familiar with a more melodious tune, the full symphony of purity. Of
course, the world is incapable of imitating purity, so it substitutes innocence
in its place, usually in the guise of naivete. This is akin to replacing a
professional orchestra with a high school brass band. They couldn’t be more
wrong. Innocence is determined purity.
Which doesn’t mean
it’s always easy to remain pure. Determination is a rigorous discipline that must supercede the temptation for relief. It
is always an enemy of pleasure. It is often difficult to maintain.
Despite society’s
almost incessant encouragement to pick up a rusty trumpet and join the brass
band, it’s disappointing to see that only 80% of born-and-bred Apostolics have
guarded their virginity. Eight out of ten is an impressive number if the Holy
Spirit isn’t present, but it seems suspect when supernatural help is
available.
“I
would have thought more people would have saved /or are saving sex until
marriage. Perhaps for those that
have said no the real issue is not an appropriate view of sex, but an
appropriate view of themselves,” one youth leader commented.
Still, the
related comments were edifying. As you so seldom hear in today’s media,
Christians who have succeeded or failed offered candid thoughts on their
experiences. Some gleefully cheer at maintaining their purity, while others
admit to problems that linger years later. To everyone who shared this portion
of their lives, we thank you. All of these truths can set others free.
