Overestimating Readers, Underestimating Reaction

By Alicia Becton
October 9, 2000

Happy Birthday, Ninetyandnine.com!

In the past year of reading every article published, I've found the quality of writing to be interesting, frustrating, funny, provocative, and/or informative¾depending on the topic.

While the provocative articles make up a small percentage of the zine, the reactions they create can be overwhelming. I read articles and understand the message because I know the writers and their intent. When negative feedback comes from readers offended at what I thought was an important issue, I realize I’ve overestimated our readers by assuming they will understand the author’s message like I do.

Regardless of the mixed views, I'm proud of the articles we've published and the topics we are unafraid to introduce into a forum for reasonable reflection and discussion. I will “agree to disagree” with someone as long as both sides are fairly represented or a strong case is made¾and I think we've accomplished that. To take a stand on any issue without thinking it through or questioning its validity is not in my nature and I'm thankful the web zine pushes us to think for ourselves.

Thanks to everyone that has either read, written, or worked on this site. I'm happy to be a part of it.
