Quizzing Survey – From Dating to Format Changes
By Chad L. R. Faubert While attending the 2000 North American Bible Quiz Tournament (NABQT), I enlisted the help of 36 quizzers to partake in the first-ever, on-the-scene NABQT survey. The following is the completely unscientific result of much head scratching, heart searching, eye rolling, and knee slapping. The questions ranged from what quizzers would change about quizzing to whom I should take to the banquet. (However, results will not be posted concerning the last question. Needless to say, I did attend the banquet by myself, but neither was I alone as I sat with my friends from Cincinnati, where I was asked one of the most memorable of questions, “Chad, do you have a job?”) Question No. 1,
worth 10 points: Other than the Word (it was taken as a given), what is the
best thing about Bible Quizzing to you? Answer: Ratio: Fellowship (or Friends/Socializing) 51% Girls (way to go, guys!) 14% Devotions 11% Traveling 11% Competition
6% Also mentioned were: “The way I hit the buzzer” (?!?),
“Spending time with my team,” and
.5 for “Life’s lessons” (someone couldn’t make up their mind). Question 2, worth
20 points: If there were
something you could change about Bible Quizzing in general, what would it be? Answer:
Ratio: Buzzer (change it back) 25% Shorter year 17% Make the retirement age older 8% More tournaments 8% Less charting/less verses 8% Bro. Walker (to come back) 6% Also mentioned were: Better quizmasters (ouch!), getting team mascots, no “bum” questions, special verse cards, the ability to contest a contest (thoughtful), give points for a contest granted (also thoughtful), and change the buzzer colors to Lime Green and Orange (ah, not so thoughtful!) Question No. 3
worth 30 points: If there were
something you could change about the NABQT, what would it be? Answer:
Ratio: Fun/organized activities 39% Sports tourney (Baseball/Football) 17% I don’t know 8% Triple Elimination Bracket 8% Better entertainment at the banquet 8% Have the NABQT in the summer 6% Also mentioned were: Change the question writers (ouch, again!), make the NABQT a month long, one quizzer said, “I studied too hard to only quiz three quizzes.” (1 win, 2 losses). Concerning the activities, numerous quizzers only know the other quizzers from their region and would like the opportunity to develop more friendships instead of just looking at them from across the room or walking by them on the way to lunch. Numerous quizzers also mentioned the entertainment at the 1997 banquet as being the last good year of actually funny stuff. Over-time
Question No. 4, worth 20 points: Between
the starting Saturday and ending Friday of the NABQT, which day is the best day
to either ask or be asked to the banquet? Answer:
Ratio: Wednesday 47% Tuesday 22% Thursday 17% Monday 6% Never 6% Friday (it was a guy, ladies!): 1 3% Reasons given were: “That way I could scope out the
ladies and then make my choice” (niiiiice!!); “Then we could spend more time
together getting to know one another” ninetyandnine.com © Chad L. R. Faubert, 2000 -------- Chad L.R.
