Azusa Street - A Musical DramaBy Alicia Becton The early 1900s marked the Apostolic beginnings in the United States with the outpouring of the Holy Ghost as evidenced by speaking in tongues. Revivals broke out all over the Midwest and Texas. Then, one Bible school student felt a call to go to California. William Seymour journeyed to Los Angeles to share the message of Acts 2 and soon began preaching and teaching on Azusa Street. The revival continued for years at that location and was noted in Life magazine as one of the top 100 events of the century. This story and history of our movement is currently being portrayed in a musical drama by the First United Pentecostal Church in Nashville. The drama tells the story of how a fundamentalist pastor, his wife, and their crippled little girl discover a whole new experience in living for God by visiting Azusa Street. The drama not only emphasizes the revelation of speaking in tongues, but also the miracles of healing that God did not stop performing in Acts. The thought process the pastor goes through to reason everything out and determine if it is just emotionalism is very logical until his daughter displays enough faith to believe Jesus can heal her. The production is very professional and extremely well done, but it is much more than a production. Azuza Street once again promotes faith and provides roots to our experience from almost 100 years ago. It quickly turns into a special church service for the whole audience, with several receiving the baptism of the Holy Ghost in performances this past weekend. As mentioned in the drama: “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8) The book of Acts continues from Azusa Street to present day. There will be four more performances this
coming weekend at the Nashville UPC. If interested, call (615)297-1450. Coverage of the Azusa Street musical by the ninetyandnine.com Article © 2000, Alicia Becton ------- Alicia Becton is
