Sonnet #1
By David Schultz
November 27, 2000
Last time I'd taken stock of all my things
It seemed so little wanted, what was had
And concentrating thought on what that brings
Took even more from time that should be glad
And then I thought of something given me
How more than once was offered with your words
Something I treasure most and yet is free
Like wings and thoughts of satiated birds
In younger days, when I and every child
While finding gems like plants and rocks, we seized
And counted wealth, no day again so mild
I noticed this same bird above the trees
Who carries in it's grasp a thing for miles
So I hold tight and tally up your smiles.
