UPCI General
Conference Election Results
The United Pentecostal Church International (UPCI) is
reelecting/electing the directors of each division (they’re up for renewal
every two years) on Wednesday, October 10, 2001 at their General Conference in
Louisville, Kentucky. Elections are a two step process where the incumbent and
any nominees are open to be named on the nominating ballot. If no candidate
receives a two-thirds majority, then the top three candidates are then in a
run-off vote. This year’s election has a new wrinkle—the
implementation of term limits. Eight year term limits began in 1993 with the
caveat that if an incumbent (after eight years of service) did not receive a
two-thirds majority on the nominating ballot, the incumbent would be ineligible
to run again that year. Along with term limits, General Superintendent Nathaniel A.
Urshan and Foreign Missions Director Harry Scism are retiring, both after 20
years of service, so this should prove a most interesting year. ninetyandnine.com will be covering the elections throughout October 10 and hopes to offer an in-depth report that evening.
