The State of the Apostolic Nation - Spiritual Disciplines

June 10, 2002

Everyone knows how their Christian peer group is - or isn’t - doing spiritually, but where do Apostolics stand as a worldwide movement? Are we primed for revival, or simply giving God lip service? Are we communing with Him through devotions and honestly searching the scriptures, or are we happy to remain Professional Pentecostals, enamored with traditionalism? That’s what ninetyandnine.com wanted to know when we asked these questions to the worldwide Apostolic body in an online poll between April 29 – May 6, 2002.

This type of poll is always dangerous because you can end up with respondents honestly, but optimistically, answering their hearts (“I’m trying to pray 30 minutes each day so I’ll choose  that.”) over their daily reality (“I’m lucky to pray 15 minutes a day.”), or you have the other danger, which has typical Apostolics who don’t wish to examine their walk with God too closely not participating.

Still, you can’t host a survey and then insist reality is different. After all, just because the survey might not be a perfect mirror of the body of Christ today doesn’t mean it doesn’t represent the reality of today’s leaders and influencers.

Some interesting survey factoids worth noting:

*    ninetyandnine.com’s core audience is in the 18-30 age group, yet this survey skewed higher (age-wise) than last winter’s media survey.  With total respondents being nearly identical, the 31-40 age group was up seven percent while the 24-30 age group was down 10 percent.

*    With total respondents being nearly identical to our last survey, there was an eight percent jump in female respondents.

*    The lowest statistics per category were nearly always below 10 percent, and thus, go largely undiscussed in the Noteworthy Statistical Breakdowns. (Since you can get 10 percent of almost anything on any question.)

As the astounding percentage of dedicated churchgoers proves, a walk with God - particularly attending church - provides a needed anchor against the turbulence of our busy, complicated lifestyles/schedules. It doesn’t appear to be changing anytime soon.

Now it’s your turn to analyze:

*    What statistics ring true and what are questionable?

*    What numbers are the most important indicators of where we are today?

*    Where does this survey indicate revival is heading?

Absorb the results and tell us what you think!

Special thanks to Shirley McDonald and Nita Curry for crunching most of this data into shape, as they have in the past.

One final note, if you use these findings when writing, teaching, or preaching, please reference ninetyandine.com as your source.
