Print Long hair and Rennies Why are members of the UPCI not leading the world in publishing books and internet sites on caring for and styling long hair? In case you’re not affiliated with the United Pentecostal Church, International (or other Apostolic organizations), let me catch you up to speed. In most UPCI churches, it is taught that women should have long hair, and on top of that, it should be uncut hair. I would go so far as to say that, collectively, we are the foremost authority in the world on long hair. And I have found one Apostolic website that discusses long hair called Apostolic Beauty that, by the way, has some great tips on hair care and how to be modestly beautiful. You know the greatest contingency of people on the internet who talk about how to fix and care for long hair? Women who frequent Renaissance Faires have the best information out there on this topic. These people call themselves “Rennies,” and as a person with (unsaved) family members who travel to work these faires across the country, I can tell you that these places are the Devil’s playground. And I don’t use that term lightly; in fact I can’t remember ever having used that term for anything else in my life. But these faires are places where all manner of occultish activity, such as tarot cards, palm reading, astrology, and many other things, is practiced with great frequency and is well respected among the workers. And that’s not even counting the drug use that goes on there. These are not the people who should be telling me how to style my long hair! Okay, my righteous indignation is getting the better of me. I’ll get off my soapbox now by issuing a general plea to someone out there to get a good website started (with pictures!) about current hairdos and great products to use, with pictures and how-to articles, for long hair. And no, that person’s not me—my hair fell down out of its bun twice just on the way to work today, so trust me, you don’t want me giving any hairstyle advice. But some of you have incredible talent and knowledge on dealing with long hair. Please share it with the rest of us who don’t! Lori Hacking Have you heard about missing pregnant woman Lori Hacking in Salt Lake City? First there was Laci Peterson, now Lori. Lori hasn’t been found yet (as of this writing), but I’m afraid it’s only a matter of time. It’s just so upsetting and heartbreaking to see these women who are overflowing with excitement about having their first child lose not only their life, but also their baby’s life. And it’s the fathers who do it! Nothing I can think of would be good enough punishment for these men, but they will get their just reward one day. Lighter Fare Smokey Robinson is coming out with his first gospel album. Apparently he was healed of drug addiction at a storefront church in L.A. Hmmm, wonder if it was an Apostolic church? I’m planning my daughter’s first birthday party. She loves kitties, so I have searched the internet for a good cat/kitten cake to make for her. Here’s one that I really like, but you need an engineering degree to figure out their diagrams on how to assemble it! Plus, I like how it says the degree of difficulty “depends on skill.” Well, if I were really skilled at cake decorating and assembly, would I be asking you how hard it is to do? Maybe the cake from Wal-Mart isn’t looking so bad. The exercise plan is going well. You may remember that last week I discussed joining a gym (which is actually my local Curves). On Monday I went to work out, and imagine my surprise when I hear what I can only describe as a techno/club version of the Newsboys singing, “You give me joy that’s unspeakable, and I like it, and I like it, yeah,” to the thump, thump, thump of a bass techno beat. At first it was laughable, but then I started enjoying it. Well, at least enjoying it to work out to. I wouldn’t want to hear it on my local Christian radio station. Title By the way, the new title for this blog is Butterflies and Bees. It comes from a saying to use when you’re stressed out or frustrated. On taking a deep breath in, you say, “In with the butterflies,” and on the deep exhale you say, “out with the bees.” I love that saying because it makes me smile every time I say it. I’m not sure who came up with it, so I can’t give or take any credit. But thanks, whoever you are!
