There’s so much news in our world. I have gotten to where I can’t read, listen, see it anymore. I overdosed on bad news last weekend and haven’t read more than headlines since.

Today, I took the plunge again. A quick peek at the Drudge Report just to see if I was missing anything. Not much has changed, that’s for sure.

Two years ago I was in Moscow for the month of July so I browsed the Pravda link from The Drudge Report. I found a rather interesting article about the 9/11 Commission Report. Since it is an editorial and written from a Russian perspective, I don’t know if it’s satire, or real fact. In any case, there are people over the ocean who think our politicians have nothing better to do than grandstand and waste our tax dollars investigating things that should be common knowledge.

I take exception to that notion. I think it’s a great part of America that no action is left unchecked. You can’t crash a bunch of planes into buildings here without someone following up your steps to see why and how you did it. You can’t murder someone and simply sweep it under the carpet—someone will be curious enough to find out what happened.

Maybe the 9/11 Commission decided we’re not safe, yet, but I feel safer just knowing that someone is trying to prevent it from happening again.

We have a young man at our church who is autistic. I don’t know much about autism, but he is the sweetest, most gentle person I have met in my life. And he loves God, unquestionably. I love to watch him in church because he basks in the presence of the Lord.

Many people sort of overlook him. Although he’s 6 feet tall, he’s quiet. He rarely speaks and when he does it’s almost a whisper. But he smiles—huge smile—all of the time.

Tonight he sang with the youth chorale. I was surprised at how well he knew the words and have heard that he has a very nice singing voice. That wasn’t the best, though. His eyes lit up and his face fairly shone when he looked up. It was as though he could see the Lord, high and lifted up.

He made me think about the clutter in my life that clogs my mind and distracts my spirit. Time to clean the closets and get rid of junk. Refocus.

Okay, back to listening to the morning news as I get ready for work. It appears that they are going to dissect the 9/11 Commission Report piece meal. Maybe I can take it a little at a time.

Today they talked about the President’s reaction. First of all, I can’t believe that anyone would object to the President calmly hearing the news, letting the children continue reading as long as he could, and then calmly going somewhere to be protected. Why is that a problem? Would they rather have him . . what? Rant? Jump around?

I remember that day so vividly. At the time I was a middle school teacher at a Christian school. I had to project the same calm to my students. They didn’t understand, of course, and they relied on the adults around them to make sense of absurdity. They relied on us to tell them the truth. We were the ones to disseminate what the radio was saying and filter it until it made sense. I was glad for a President who was calm. It gave me a sense of someone to rely on. Maybe the world was going crazy, but America would stand up to it calmly and deal with the crisis.

As the President said, “We’re at war and someone is going to pay.” Somehow we would muddle through the crisis and come out ahead. That’s America.

I spent a fair amount of the day listening to my boss, who is extremely Democratic, talk about the convention. I guess I live my life a little separated from politics. I knew there were people out there with a strong opinion, but never really thought about it myself. As an American, I should, I just haven’t.

When I look at the paper or hear the news, my mind catches the unusual stories about people or things, not about politics. For example, the story in the New York Times today about the computers crashing in Dade County, Florida. What’s so interesting about that? They were being used to tally votes for their governor! (They just can’t get it right when it comes to voting in Florida.)

I can relate to those kinds of problems, ya know? Some days, nothing seems to go right. I think someone ought to tell Florida to go up north, get some rest, and vote again another day.
