“God’s side”

"I don't want to claim that God is on our side. As Abraham Lincoln told us, I want to pray humbly that we are on God's side." John Kerry made this statement at the Democratic Convention during his nomination acceptance speech, and you have to admit, that’s a great line. I’m still undecided who to vote for, and that line really got me.

I didn’t know Lincoln said that, so I researched it. Turns out the story goes that in the darkest days of the Civil War, when the Union wasn’t doing so well, someone asked Lincoln if God was on the Union’s side. Lincoln replied, “The question is not whether God is on our side, but whether we are on God’s side.”

It also turns out that this is John Edward’s line. He used it once in 2002 at a National Prayer Breakfast and again in February at a Democratic debate. Knowing that it’s not original to Kerry definitely lessens the coolness factor that Kerry said it. I know they all have speechwriters, so nothing is really original to them, but still. I just don’t like it.

One of the most ridiculous statements that politicians make is, “You can’t legislate morality.” What? That’s exactly what all legislation is. A body of lawmakers decides that something is immoral, and makes a law to prohibit it. Murder is immoral, so it’s against the law. Stealing is immoral, so it’s against the law. Insider trading is immoral, so it’s against the law. Therefore, it’s important to me that our country’s leaders have a strong sense of morality. The best way to have a strong sense of morality is to have a deep faith and belief in God. And it is based on this that I vote. So Kerry stating that he doesn’t wear his faith on his sleeve doesn’t impress me. And Kerry copying Edward’s line about God doesn’t impress me, either. But I’d have to say, I’m still officially undecided.

Creflo Dollar

When you’re a TV evangelist, having the last name “Dollar” has got to be one of the most unfortunate cards dealt to you in life. Creflo Dollar can be seen on TBN, and, to give him credit, I have used some of his great material on the authority we have through Jesus and in the Holy Ghost in a Bible study that I taught. But when you’re in a profession that has a bad reputation for people being in it only for the money, that last name is not the greatest in the world.

My friend and I have come up with some solutions to help Dr. Dollar. We think maybe he should go Italian and use “Lira” as his last name, or maybe go Spanish and use “Dinero.” It’s still the same name, just in a different language, so it doesn’t sound so bad. Or maybe he should leave the spelling the same, but use a Spanish pronunciation. “Doyar.” That’s much better.

Passwords

If you work for a company that requires you to change your password frequently, then you know how frustrating it is to come up with something different, that you’ll actually remember, every single time. But the purpose of a password is to protect the stuff on your computer, so I thought I’d pass along this list of weak passwords that you shouldn’t use. Fortunately none of mine are on there (at least not this week), but if you find one that you’ve been using, you may want to change it today!
