Reader's responses to The Big Question.
The Question: It’s
six months later. Did The Passion of the Christ make a noticeable
difference in you? your church? your community? your nation? Explain
The Answer: “No
change in my life yet. Ask me after it comes out on DVD. (Although a ton of
people at work stopped me after it first hit theaters to comment on how much it
impacted them!)”
The Answer: “I
felt The Passion had the expected results—people who saw it said they
were changed forever...and if forever is a few weeks, then they may be correct.”
The Answer: “No,
because I’m an Apostolic young person that still stands against picture shows
and TVs.”
The Answer: “Sad
to say, but no!”
The Answer: “I
haven’t seen it yet. Going to buy it tomorrow! Can’t wait to see it!”
The Answer: “Nope—it
didn’t do a thing. But guess what did? Prayer and fasting and God’s people
hungry for revival. That made a difference.”
The Answer: “Not
that I have seen, but have only heard about.”
The Answer: “Only
Jesus knows the seeds that were sown and the work that was done in the hearts of
people who saw the film. Who knows? We may reap a harvest down the road; on the
surface right now, there doesn’t appear to be any significant impact.”
The Answer: “No.
The pastor was incredibly excited the first two weeks after viewing the movie.
He planned to have the entire church see it (thankfully we haven’t had to
yet). Co-workers had mixed emotions, some remembering their Catholic parochial
lessons, others being appalled at the violence. We haven’t seen one person
attend church or ask for a Bible study from the movie. It was a big hit for a
short period of time, probably due to the political / religious fervor
surrounding the history of the story, but a vapor whose time has passed.”
The Answer: “1)
The movie did not make any difference whatsoever in my life, as I did not watch
it, and have no intention of doing so. 2) My pastor recommended us to not watch
it, because he did not want to back down from our stance of not going to movie
theaters, so it made no difference to our church. 3) I have no idea if it made a
difference to my community or nation, but I have not seen any difference
personally. I have seen a few ‘I was really, really touched by this movie’
type testimonies on an Apostolic forum when it came out, but that’s it.”
The Answer: “It’s
really hard to say the impact that The Passion really did make. I know in
my life personally, I view Jesus’ sacrifice totally different now. Overall, I
can’t say anything has changed, but hopefully hearts were pierced and those
people did something about that!”
The Answer: “I
did not see the movie. I am not opposed to watching movies, per se, but I am
opposed to watching rated R movies. I promised myself that I would not watch a
rated R movie. Even though I believe this movie may be one of the ‘good’
rated R movies, I feel like I must keep with my conviction of no rated R movies.”
The Answer: “I
have not watched it yet. It releases on video tomorrow. But there have been
plenty of other movies on the life of Jesus; why would this one be any
different?”
The Answer: “Actually,
I didn’t see it, but I just rented it and plan to watch it tonight. I’m a
little afraid.”
The Answer: “Didn’t
watch it. Not because I have some deeply religious belief that the cinema (sin-ema)
is evil—it’s just that I never got round to seeing the film. However, I do
have a friend who I noticed becoming more and more Christ-like over the past
year and she told me that The Passion was really the icing on the cake of
her conversion.”
The Answer: “It
has made a difference in the way I view so-called Christians (especially
Apostolics) who are ready to jump and endorse anything just because it is
labeled ‘Christian.’ The movie is obviously Catholic and filled with
unbiblical junk, but it is all well and good because it is a ‘Christian’
movie. I have not watched it and do not intend to do so.”
The Answer: “For
a few months the whole world was Christian, but now that The Passion
fever is dying out, you get to see how easily people forget about the sacrifice
that our Lord did for us. As a Christian I don’t need to see the movie to
remind me of that. I live everyday remembering what Jesus did for me. And yes, I
will admit the movie really touched me. I cried through the entire thing. But
after watching the movie, people were on fire for God, and sad to say that the
fire has burned out for a lot of people. I call it junk food—fills you up for
a while, but at the end doesn’t really satisfy you.”
The Answer: “I
haven’t seen it so the answer is no.”
