Print By Alicia Becton A couple months back I attended a five-hour Total Money Makeover Workshop conducted by Dave Ramsey. If you’re from Nashville, you’ve heard of this financial guru and his approach to living below your means and debt free. Even if you’re not from Nashville, you may have heard about him through radio broadcasts and bestselling books. Truthfully, I did not expect to stay awake or interested for five hours. I mean, what in the world can you say to keep thousands of people engaged in paying bills for that long? I was shocked at how fast the time flew by and how enjoyable and helpful the seminar was to me. I went away motivated to remain out of debt and had a better understanding of some of the financial traps people fall into. One thing Dave kept saying throughout the seminar that I also hear on his radio broadcasts is—‘Live like no one else, so later, you can live like no one else.’ The basic idea is to not spend every penny you make right away like most Americans do, so that later you will have money to live on. I liked the saying and the more I thought about it, the more I thought it could apply to our walk with God. Paul wrote, “The Spirit Itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God”(Romans 8:16). To be children of God means to live like no one else. Just like there are times when spending all your paycheck on fun stuff is what everyone else is doing or even what you would rather do, there are times as a Christian that certain decisions prevent you from having fun with certain friends or at certain places. These are the times as Christians that we have to choose to live like no one else. If you follow Dave Ramsey’s plan for Financial Peace you can later enjoy life with the means to live like no one else. The long term benefits outweigh the short term pleasures. So it is for us that later we can live eternally like no one else if we choose now to walk with the Lord. Moses took this route, “Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season” (Hebrews 11:25). It seems like such an easy plan to follow, but it eludes so many. Thanks for the suggestion, Dave.
