My Independence Day
By Robin Huffman
July 4, 2005

The question was posed, “Won’t it feel odd to be in a foreign country on Independence Day?”
“Surely, it would make you more patriotic for home than ever before.”
The more I thought about it, the more I determined celebrating my independence in a foreign land was actually not a new encounter.
You see, even back in my homeland I’ve faced the same scenario.
The price paid for future generations
Freedom, despite the miles that separate me from its source
Yet, my celebration still cannot be squelched
My citizenship is sure
No, I don’t have to be home to celebrate my Independence Day.
Oh, yes, there a grander celebration is guaranteed
But, until I can make it home my celebration doesn’t have to cease!
