Reader's responses to The Big Question.

The Question: Who are your personal heroes? Why?

The Answer: “My grandmother. She was my best friend. She was sick for 22 years and the most amazing woman I know. She was a spiritual leader, a worker in the church, and a strong woman.”

The Answer: “My pastor. He's my role model, my example. Doesn't compromise. Doesn't play the crowd. He's balanced. He's fun. He's honest. He's caring. He's my shepherd. I love my pastor!”

The Answer: “Superman.”

The Answer: “My levels of cynicism and distrust of others are too high to permit the concept of a personal hero.”

The Answer: “Robert E. Lee, the finest gentleman and soldier ever born in America. Received no demerits the entire four years at West Point. Defender of Virginia against the federal powers and bureaucrats that be still.”

The Answer: “A friend who faced personal tragedy with grace and no bitterness—I wish I could be that kind of Christian!”

The Answer: “My youth pastor, Robby Emery! He's the hardest working, most creative person I ever met.”

The Answer: “First and foremost, my God Jesus Christ. Then my father and mother, John and Julia Gavrilis. Then, Bro Jimmy Shoemake, then the late great Ronald Reagan and last but not least, our troops who are defending us. I would also add, the Israeli Army because they are an awesome military.”

The Answer: “I have no heroes. People I have looked up to in the past have only failed me. It's Jesus who has never failed. I don't look at Him as a hero; I look at Him as my Savior.”

The Answer: “Former Senator Max Cleland, author of Strong in the Broken Places, is my all-time hero, second only to Jesus. A tall, handsome officer with any future ahead he wanted, Max lost his legs and an arm in Vietnam. Instead of crawling off into a corner and quitting, he chose to take the future he wanted in politics, becoming the Georgia Secretary of State before he ran for the US Senate and won. He additionally headed up the Veterans Administration for several years, directing more successful programs for veterans before or since. I'm not sure what his personal motto is, but what he demonstrated was, ‘Never give up, Never give up, never give up.’”

The Answer: “I would say my husband is my biggest hero. He has helped me through so much. I have had two pastors I would have said were my heroes—before they betrayed the churches I went to.”

The Answer: “Jesus.”

The Answer: “Robert Sabin, for having the integrity to leave the UPC rather to sign an affirmation statement that he could not in good faith agree with. He also had the integrity not to cross things out, write in his own wording and then sign it.”

The Answer: “Jesus. I believe that answer speaks for itself. Who else would die for me to be able to spend an eternity in Heaven? Of course, that’s not the only reason. There are too many to list.”

The Answer: “Sister Debra Williams because she is an inspiration to many young ladies. Her confidence and wonderful spirit amaze me. My mother and father because they have never let me down and are a steady force in my life.”
