I Said Move!

By Tiffini Countaway
April 24, 2006

My niece and I were playing with some very stiff clay the other day. She was trying to move the clay in a certain direction, and the clay simply wouldn’t obey. She finally raised herself to her knees, took her tiny fist and pounded the clay. She shook her tiny finger at the clay and mumbled, “I said, move!”

Seeing she was frustrated, I asked if I could help her and reluctantly she said, “Yes.” I added some water and worked the clay in my hands. After a few moments the clay became more pliable. I handed it back to her; she squeezed it around in her hands and smiled at me.

I said, “Is that better?”

“Much better!” she replied.

As she began forming a nest with her clay I realized that I am just like my niece when it comes to my frustrations in life and with God. I am by nature a stubborn person and tend to be even more so when it comes to a problem I am trying to solve. I push and shove, get on my knees and pound, and then, in sheer frustration, shake my finger at my problem and command that it move!

Without fail, it never moves the way I want it to. That’s when I fold up my pride and my stubbornness, shove it in my pocket, tilt my head up, and ask God to help me. With gentle hands He reaches down, adds a little water, pushes and pulls and makes the situation a little more bearable.

He then softly asks, “Is that better?”

I sigh, simply smile, and say, “Much better!”

“…As the clay is in the potter's hand, so are ye in my hand” (Jeremiah 18:6). And that is the safest place to be.

Tiffini Countaway recently celebrated her 1 year anniversary with her hubby Andrew on a cruise.  Despite both of them getting seasick they enjoyed being away from St. Louis, eating fabulous food, and purchasing an Itzhak Tarkay serigraph.
