Lessons from the Toddler Turned 3: Birthday Party

By Shirley McDonald
June 12, 2006

Lane was about to be a three-year-old! How could that be? It seems such a short time ago that he was an infant. Since his birthday party was scheduled for the day after his birthday, his mom decided to take off work to be with him on his actual birth date. Mom and Dad got up early to decorate the house with balloons and wrapped presents.

When he woke up and walked sleepily into the festive room, Lane opened his eyes wide with surprise. After this celebration was over, however, Lane asked in all seriousness, “Was this a practice party? Because . . .where are the kids?”

Sometimes I’m afraid that we Christians have “practice” church by celebrating our salvation by ourselves. Yet where are all those others who should be worshipping with us? Just as Lane moved from his practice party to the real one with kids, let us move from practicing church to having real church by inviting others to celebrate Christ with us (Luke 14:23).
