Reader's responses to The Big Question
The Question: Did your church do anything different for Pentecost Sunday? Should they?
The Answer: Our pastor's sermon and altar call was all about the significance of Pentecost Sunday—it was even mentioned the preliminaries. I was glad this was the case, because the church I grew up in barely mentioned that I can remember it over the years.
The Answer: We had a “brushless” arbor service outdoors, with music, testimonies, and a message on the origin and fulfillment of Pentecost. There was an awesome presence of the Lord. Afterward, we went inside for an old-fashioned potluck and fellowship. It was good to break with routine and celebrate our heritage.
The Answer: They invited Mark Condon.
The Answer: We didn't do anything different. I don't know if we should; it would be neat I guess.
The Answer: They did, and it was good because it broke through some racial barriers in the city, but I don't think that Pentecostals need to do anything different for Pentecost Sunday—we experience it every time we go to church and we should experience it in our prayer life. Isaiah 1:14 (states), “Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them.”
The Answer: Children's evangelism day. We had games and a play, and the children's choir sang, and after the Sunday school, we had a picnic with the families.
The Answer: Well sorta. We had a big push; the choir learned Baptize Me Jesus and had a slide show with different baptisms throughout the year...
The Answer: No, unfortunately not. However, if we are Pentecostal shouldn't we recognize Pentecost, a holy day set by our Creator, unlike Christmas or Easter?
The Answer: No.
The Answer: My church did a big service with other Apostolic churches in the city, mass all-church choir, etc. I think Pentecostals really should spend a lot more time talking about Pentecost Sunday. Why not have a whole week of revival beforehand? I mean, they were all in one accord for at least a week before the first day of Pentecost.
The Answer: No, we did not. In fact, it was not even mentioned. Yes, we should have!
The Answer: Sign Language/ Skit for our Pentecost Sunday—It was awesome!
The Answer: What?
The Answer: Our church put on an Azusa drama. I don't think it's necessary for us to specifically celebrate Pentecost Sunday, since our Pentecost is in us. But I don't think there is anything wrong in remembering the day/time/feast when the Lord poured out His Spirit for the first time.
The Answer: Nope.
The Answer: Not one thing! It was graduation Sunday, so we were focusing on doing that instead. Yes, I think we should recognize the day if nothing else.
The Answer: My church didn't do anything different. My pastor just mentioned that Pentecost Sunday should be most important and meaningful to us as Pentecostals.
