Reader's responses to The Big Question
July 3, 2006
The Question: What’s the best or worst advice you have ever
received?
The Answer: “But God would want you
to be happy, wouldn’t He?”
The Answer: “Trust and adjust.”
The Answer: “[Applicable to any
situation] The people who matter will understand; the ones who don’t understand,
don’t matter.”
The Answer: “‘Go ahead and buy this
camper for $2,000. I’ll help you buy it and you can pay it back.’ (It turned out
to have massive, ugly problems, and I ended up selling it to someone for less
than $100, just to get rid of it.) Worst advice given by omission: Nobody sat
down with me before I got married (2x) and helped me review the situation
honestly. I might have been saved one divorce and one 6-year (so far) very,
very, very unhappy marriage if they had. Yes, I was stupid.”
The Answer: “When departing for
deployment—Never whistle while you pack!”
The Answer: “Being a leader is like
being a lady; if you have to tell someone you are, then you probably aren’t!”
The Answer: “Invest in Microsoft.”
The Answer: “Best: man with forked
tongue must not kiss balloon.”
The Answer: “Best advice: You should
think about going to Gateway College! Worst advice: a bunch of people telling me
I should date this guy who ended up going to prison a few months later (thank
God I didn’t listen to them!)”
The Answer: “I think some of the
best advice I ever received was something my mother told me: always strive to be
a peacemaker. I have always tried to live by that. Romans 12:18 states: ‘If
it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.’ As a
wife and mother, the woman in the home oftentimes sets the mood of the entire
household and I believe that creating a peaceful atmosphere definitely adds a
positive quality of life, not only at home, but also in the workplace and in
every aspect of life. The world in general is in great turmoil, so being a
peacemaker is more important now than ever.”
The Answer: “Live by your own
convictions.”
The Answer: “The worst advice I’ve
ever received came just two months after I was married. Someone very close to me
advised me not to tell my husband everything. I did not take their advice and
that person is no longer in my life.”
The Answer: “The worst advice I ever
received was ‘Check out ninetyandnine.com!’”
The Answer: “Just follow the
standards and everything will be all right.”
The Answer: “It’s better to ask
forgiveness, than to receive permission.”
The Answer: “Live as much life as
you can, as often as possible. Take risks, and do everything you can dream. You
only have one life, and short time to live.”
The Answer: “It’s not enough to love
God—you have to fall in love with Him.”
The Answer: “The best advice I ever
received was when I started church and my pastor came to me and said, ‘No matter
what, don’t quit coming to church. No matter if you fall, you may feel like a
hypocrite, just don’t give up. Keep coming to church.’ So that is what I have
done. No matter what happened in the beginning, I kept going. Now I am sold
out.”
