Reader's responses to The Big Question
The Question: How
patriotic are you? How are you celebrating Independence Day?
The Answer: “The all
American way—I'll be working.”
The Answer: “I’m not very patriotic.
I used to be, but I started looking into stuff on my own and found out that we
are not the only free country in the world. I also came to think that I don't
call this world my home, so I pledge no allegiance to this world. But I do like
to celebrate brave men that fought so that others could live in better
conditions. We are usually at camp this time of year, so we celebrate there.”
The Answer: “Nothing special. Just a
day at home. We may fire up the grill, but I'm not positive. And no fireworks
for me, either; I'm sort of gun shy when it comes to that. A childhood accident
is to blame for that. But it'll be a relaxing day at home for me.”
The Answer: “I am very patriotic!
However, I'm Canadian, so I don't celebrate Independence Day.”
The Answer: “How in the world would
you define degrees of patriotism? We're celebrating with immediate family for a
cookout and games.”
The Answer: “Given the material I
have to work with, i.e., a husband that likes to sleep until after noon on his
days off, and spend the rest of the day on the couch watching TV, as well as a
church that is too small/unwilling to have a church picnic on July 4th weekend,
nor do I have any relatives within several thousand miles or any friends
inviting us to a picnic, nor do I own a BBQ. I will most likely not rise to the
challenge of single handedly organizing a picnic or outing for the remaining 5
year old, 3 year old, and myself. I will probably spend the day cleaning house,
chasing after said 5 and 3 year olds, and plan some outing close by at the last
minute to watch fireworks. Or since DH bought a cheap small box of assorted
fireworks, I might even let him blow off the fireworks at home, and pretend it’s
a family outing, and call it a day. Yippee.”
The Answer: “Major patriotic but not
celebrating this year. I'm trying to finish writing a book.”
The Answer: “I've sold fireworks
(like every good A/P church, we have the traditional firework stand), swimming
when I'm not selling...and a family cookout on July 4th. Maybe I'll go to the
fireworks presented by the city, too, but I'll do that just so I can try to take
pictures of them.”
The Answer: “Extremely patriotic!
I'm second generation American. All my grandparents emigrated from Greece and
thankful I am for that! This is the greatest nation on earth along with Israel.
God bless America, land that I love....Home of the Free because of the
Brave! We have a potluck and watch the fireworks.”
The Answer: “By working at CVS
pharmacy.”
The Answer: “I'm working, so others
can celebrate... same thing I do every year.”
The Answer: “Celebrating
Independence by eating hamburgers and Freedom Fries, Vidalia (Georgia) onions,
and ice tea. God Bless America abundant cows!”
The Answer: “Being a slave at the
newspaper I work for. But I'm getting paid double. Yeah!”
The Answer: “Very patriotic.
Unfortunately, I celebrated the 4th by selling fireworks as a fundraiser. Next
year, I'm going to be a true American and have a cookout and volleyball!”
The Answer: “By listening to
wonderful sermons at the Louisiana Camp meeting!”
The Answer: “I love my country, but
I'm so heartsick by the direction it is taking. I went to a BBQ with some
friends this year, but that was about it.”
The Answer: “I consider myself
really patriotic. Although I think that I could show it better sometimes. I
celebrated Independence Day by spending the day with my family. Early in the
evening my friends and I played some tennis; then we had a bonfire and watched
the fireworks.”
The Answer: “Writing quiz
questions.”
The Answer: “I'm not too patriotic.
I spent the day in bed as I had my wisdom teeth cut out the day before!”
The Answer: “Yes, I am patriotic. I
spent my day exercising my religious freedom by attending Louisiana Camp
Meeting, listening to outstanding sermons and singing…what a perfect way to
celebrate.”
