Why Am I God’s Emissary to the Cranky?

By Theresa Huff
August 6, 2006

It was an awful day at work! One of the nurses I work with was out for the rest of the week and the other was in a horrible mood. I had offered to help with everything she had to do, only to be answered with a very abrupt, “No, I'll do it.”

After about three or four times offering, I thought to myself “Well, Sister Sue, you just do that!” Now this is the same nurse that I consistently go out of my way to be nice to strictly because I feel she doesn't like me. I can honestly say that I have no earthly idea why. I've never argued with her, nor been rude to her, or any other thing that I can think of. Why shouldn't I return the rudeness? I have done my part for the last several years—even going above and beyond the call of trying to be her friend.

A shortened version of Luke 6:31 and Matthew 7:12 goes something like, “As you would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.” But wait a minute! That would mean I would need to turn the other cheek. I'm not really too good at that! Actually, quite the opposite! Jesus was beaten, spit on, and crucified by the people he loved the most, yet he willing laid down His life so that we might have life more abundantly. He could have called his angels “to do unto others,” but he didn't. Gulp.

Maybe I should change my attitude into one of a sweet spirit and end her day with a smile and “have a good evening?” What's that about you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar? What would I have to lose other than pride? I have the power within me through
Jesus Christ to change someone else's bad day.

And that’s what it means for me to be a true Christian. Well, here goes nothing . . .
