Mama is Having ‘Contraptions’
April 16, 2007
By Theresa Huff

Last week I went to the hospital to see my new great-niece.  Needless to say, she is just that--great and precious!  She is the third child, having one brother who is five and a sister who is three.  The 5-year-old had been pretty worried about his mother being in labor and pain.  She quickly reassured him and answered other questions that he came up with.  While at the hospital, she heard him explaining to his 3-year-old sister about the birth process, which went something like this:  “Mama is having ‘contraptions.’ Then her bubble will burst and then the baby comes out of the ‘womb-a.’” Not a bad explanation for a 5-year-old!

What about new birth in Christ?  Birth isn’t always easy--the pain, the labor, the push, and then complete joy as we hold that little child in our hands for the first time.  We, as Christians, go through the contraption part, too.  This includes the fasting and prayer part that we seem never to have the time for.  It also includes the push and extra time it takes to bring the individual to Christ.  No matter how we feel, we must get ourselves ready to nourish the new babe as it makes an appearance.  We must emotionally prepare ourselves to make a concerted effort to be what the new babe requires, regardless of the time it takes.  As the new child is pushed from the womb-a and into its new life, we are responsible for the health of this child--for providing food and everyday needs that will unexpectedly come up.

It is our responsibility as mature Christians to feed, be an example, nurture, and encourage that new baby, so that they might in turn become a productive part of the new birth process.  The Apostle Paul said, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold all things become new” (II Corinthians 5:17).

Let’s purpose in our hearts, as the more mature Christians, to help keep the new look in the new child’s eyes.  Let His love shine through so that you may be blessed by giving spiritual birth!
