Reader's responses to The Big Question

May 21, 2007

The Question: Outside of your tithes, what giving are you involved in?

The Answer: “Foreign missions, Tupelo Children's Mansion, United Way, various school fundraisers—and right now, all those graduation and wedding gifts!”

The Answer: “A percentage offering, building fund, Foreign Missions, Home Missions, Tupelo Children’s Home, various assorted school fund raisers by the curtain climbers at Church, and graduation/wedding gifts.”

The Answer: “Faith Promise, building fund, sponsor a child through Compassion Int'l, special projects at church, general offerings.”

The Answer: “Missions and a local charity that is helping rebuild a neighborhood of low economic status. I wish I could do so much more!”

The Answer: “Missions and building fund, clothing to Goodwill once annually.”

The Answer: “General offering, missions, building fund, occasional donations for military personnel overseas, dinners for new mothers/shut-ins, etc.”

The Answer: “Mainly missions, our church building fund, other offerings and special needs.”

The Answer: “General offering, foreign missions, Save Our Children, Mother's Memorial, Sheaves for Christ. Also monthly I sponsor a child through World Vision.”

The Answer: “General Building Fund.”

The Answer: “Missions, plus I buy things for the youth all the time out of my own pocket.”

The Answer: “My husband and I set aside a sum of money and put it in a separate bank account. We support most of the UPCI programs, but the better part of these funds are given to individuals who spend of their own funds to better God's kingdom, people such as a lady who checks every Saturday on her bus kids, a single lady who travels across the state ‘filling in’ pulpits of small churches, etc. Some of these people use proportionately more of their personal funds than most of us and do it unselfishly, so we add to their gas money or pay for extra activities for the children's ministry, unreimbursed by church funds. It feels good.”

The Answer: “I give regularly to Mother's Memorial, singles, youth, Spirit of Freedom, Sunday school, general offering, home mission churches.”

The Answer: “Foreign missions.”

The Answer: “All foreign missions giving.”

The Answer: “United Way and American Red Cross.”

The Answer: “Why does other giving have to be excluded from being considered tithes (i.e. aid, missions, personal giving, donations, Christian charity, etc.)?

The Answer: “Building fund, missions and miscellaneous offerings. Plus I give of my time to the church in various volunteer capacities.”
