Reader's responses to The Big Question

June 11, 2007

The Question: What style of music is in your church service? Is this up to date with what most of your members prefer?

The Answer: “Well, let’s see. When I lead songs in our church, I usually try to cater to our diverse congregation. For example, tonight I led “Oh, the Blood of Jesus,” then “Praise the Lord with all Your Heart” and ended it with a Brooklyn Tab song called “I’m Amazed.” The Sunday service song leaders in our church are youth, so we make the mistake of often catering to ourselves. We do songs like “Praise Him for the Victory” or “Shout with a Voice of Triumph.” Actually, our church is pretty good about worshipping to any song, regardless of personal preference. We have wonderful older saints who sometimes run faster and jump higher than our youth do!”

The Answer: “We have an eclectic mix. However, there seems to be more of the newer songs than the older ones, even though our pastor prefers the older ones that touch your heart.”

The Answer: “Black Gospel. No, most of the members don’t like it. Most of them listen to more rock genre music in their private time. The Pentecostals really have a lot of catching up to do.”

The Answer: “Our music is mostly praise and worship with some southern music type songs. It is this way because that is what the pastor says and over all it is good. Some do not like the southern gospel and some want some of the old songs, but the pastor is happy and that is what seems to be important here.”

The Answer: “Black gospel, old hymns, contemporary Christian worship songs, alternative-band . . . it just depends on the service.”

The Answer: “We use audio sound tracks. I run the soundboard, and this works okay for a small home missions work, but I do prefer the flexibility of live music. Our music is modern, but I do love the old songs and miss them. Then there is always the treat when I either hit the wrong button or one of the kids turns off the power to the system during service. Still, we are pretty upbeat and we are growing.”

The Answer: “Contemporary Christian music, some songs written by church members, some gospel music; Piano, drums, bass, still waiting on a guitar player. I think most of our member’s prefer rockier Christian music, but a lot of them like what we have. Personally I prefer Caribbean gospel music...but anyway, the music department is a work in progress...we just want to usher in the presence of God, that’s all that matters. “

The Answer: “Very loud, repetitious or very old repetitious. I think most of us would prefer a happy medium.”

The Answer: “It’s old fashioned. With the older choruses. I mean, like, we sing, the traditional songs like “I’ll Fly Away,” “Amazing Grace,” “The Old Rugged Cross.” Our members prefer this; we have mostly elderly people in our church. And they fuss and complain if we try to update.”

The Answer: “I think our worship leaders think they do a good mix, but it’s almost entirely new worship choruses, which have some serious limitations.”
