Ambassador Service = Success or Failure

June 11, 2007

By Randy Bailey

Do you know that every company or business has two key ingredients that will cause them to be successful or cause them to fail? The first thing is their product and the other is service.

Some time ago I contacted a company regarding high speed internet. The sales rep I talked to gave me some bad information which cost me some additional money and they failed to keep their word. Once I knew that I had incorrect information, I called their customer service department. I was on the phone for nearly an hour and spoke to eight different people. Not one person showed real concern about the issue, but they were more than happy to pass me off to someone else and several different departments. Each person I spoke with always had an answer that sounded like they were reading a cue card. I was so aggravated that I vowed to never do business with that company again.

On the flip side, I have also experienced just the opposite with a dealership where I purchased my truck. They have impressed me more than once with their second-to-none customer service. I have had my truck for a year and a half and they still call from time to time and ask if I remain happy with my purchase. They sent me homemade cookies twice and they have great service when I take it in for maintenance. Service like this will have me going back each time my wife and I need a new vehicle and I am more than glad to tell others about their wonderful service.

We too play an important role of service. We are the servants of the living God and we either serve Him well or poorly, for He is who we represent, “Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God” (II Corinthians 5:20). The word “ambassador” in the original Greek means to be a representative. Everything we do represents Christ. Like the two companies I dealt with, we too will either leave a bad taste in someone’s mouth or they will glorify God because we represented Him to the best of our ability. We can be in a hurry and miss opportunities to bless someone; we could be so wrapped up in the hustle and bustle of life and snap at someone who is slowing us down.

We are the body of Christ. We have been given the task to serve others with the love and joy of the Lord. I know many people who were wounded by someone who forgot how to serve. Whether you like it or not, people watch those who serve the Lord and observe the things they do.

Paul wrote, “Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men” (II Corinthians 3:2). We have the opportunity to allow the light of the gospel to shine from us or we could offer poor service like I received from a high speed internet company.
