Hitting
the Pause Button
June

I
admit it! I was frustrated. I was in the drive-thru lane at a popular fast food
restaurant for lunch. There was a line that was actually moving at a decent
rate, but I thought it could be faster. I mean, I am busy; it was fast
food, and I was in a hurry to get back to work. I was about to back out of the
lane and either go inside or go somewhere else when I felt my conscience say,
“Hey calm down, be patient, take a moment and relax.” So I stayed in the
lane, took a deep breath, and began looking around. I listened to the breeze
blowing the leaves, closed my eyes, and enjoyed the peace and quiet.
As
much as I hate it, I always seem to be on the run. If I’m not “doing,” I
am planning or organizing, and sometimes it’s just too much. Life seems to
always be in fast forward—but that doesn’t mean I can’t hit the pause
button every now and then.
The
psalmist said, “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalms 46:10).
Ah,
yes, two dreaded words in this fast-paced world—“be still.” And yet that
is exactly what Scripture is beckoning me to do. No, life won’t stop and I
will always have things to do, but I have decided to hit the pause button every
now and then and just be still.

keep the air around her fresh as she works in an old, mold-infested building.
