Out of Chaos Comes…God?

By Phillip Johnson

Genesis 1:2 “And the earth was without form and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep.  And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.”

Have you ever gotten up in the night for a late night snack, reached the middle of the living room, only to find that you are surrounded by darkness and unsure whether or not you moved that toe stubbing ottoman?

The Bible begins at creation for a reason deeper than it being the beginning. There is a powerful lesson to be learned in these first couple verses.

Darkness comes at us from many different directions and it can be suffocating.  The loss of a loved one, financial disaster, natural disaster, sickness, sin, you name it.  It can leave you emotionally and spiritually in the middle of the living room not sure if you should go back or risk further injury.

In verse 2 of Genesis 1 we find the earth without shape, empty, full of chaos, and covered in darkness.  When you think of the size of the earth, if the darkness mentioned is literally covering the earth, that is an awful lot of darkness.  However, verse two ends positively—“And the Spirit of God moved…”

No matter how dark, how depressing, how suffocating there is a precedent laid out in these first few verses.  Darkness may cover the earth, but if you would turn your eyes upwards you would see that God has your darkness covered.
