The Best is Yet to Come? September 10, 2007 By Theresa Huff
My son recently lost his job where he had been working for about a year. We still do not feel that it was right, but the decision wasn’t in our hands. He was injured on the job late Friday afternoon, but thought he would be okay and finished out his shift. He didn’t want to file a workman’s compensation claim if it wasn’t totally necessary.
Alas, during the night, the pain in his knee became much worse, so in the morning he reported it to his tool pusher on the oil rig where he worked. As protocol demanded, the tool pusher called home office to see which doctor my son needed to see. What he heard from the “higher up” (and that is questionable) was to fire my son. According to him, the injury wasn’t reported on the day it happened, so “just fire him” was the answer. My son was devastated! He loved his job and just the week before had had a verbal commendation from EnCana, a company that inspects oil rigs and makes sure that everything is up to specification. He had never been late for work, always willing to work over and had never been written up for anything!
As far as we are concerned, this is anything but fair. My first thought was that I would love to have that “higher up” and grind his bones into the ground. After all, this is my cub he is messing with. Then I began to pray. The thought “Be still and let God” kept coming back to me every time I prayed. I would try to reason “but, God, you know . . .” and the same thought would just recur every time. “Be still and know that I am God” (Psalms 46:10). My thoughts, being the human that I am, is that I would rather take care of this person who thought he was someone!
Does my son have his job back? No! After many calls to Human Resources, he hasn’t heard anything from them at this time. Do we think this is right? No! What I do know is that God keeps saying be still and be patient. Jesus told us, “In your patience possess ye your soul” (Luke 21:19). We dedicated Jono to God soon after he was born, and his future is in God’s hands. So, we are going to be patient and wait on God because the best is yet to come! ninetyandnine.com © 2007, Theresa Huff
