Presidential Hopeful Mike Huckabee visits The Apostolic Church

By Sarah k. Holland

With the Michigan primary this week, politics are the top topic, but not so much as this Friday when Pastor Warman received a call from one of Governor Mike Huckabee’s campaign managers letting him know of Governor Huckabee’s desire to visit The Apostolic Church on Sunday night.

I admit, as we waited in choir practice for the Governor’s arrival, we were all a little nervous and excited.  We were singing away to Glorious, when through the window I saw the arrival of three black suburbans, followed by a white suburban and the press bus.  On his way in to the office, Governor Huckabee stopped in to visit our choir practice, apologizing for the interruption and telling us about his 7 years as a bass player for his church’s praise and worship band.

Pastor Warman had already announced his coming to the congregation in our morning service, so there was no warning when Governor Huckabee slid in with the band, and began to play the bass for praise and worship.  After praise and worship, Governor Huckabee greeted the congregation.  He spoke about abortion and marriage, and the importance of realizing the value of life.  He spoke about how even if one’s intention is pure, but their definition of what is right is not right, then intention doesn’t matter.  He was well spoken, but what impressed me was that he not only showed up early, but stayed late.  Too often when politicians stop in for a visit, they leave before service ends.  Governor Huckabee stayed through church, and then took time to visit with our congregation.

I was also very impressed with his time with my pastor’s daughter.  Shae is 11 years old and amazing, and when she was introduced to the Governor, she pulled out her notebook filled with questions that she and her friends had compiled.  She wanted to know what his thoughts were on the “petroleum in Alaska” and if he “had considered using it to keep gas prices down?”  She also wanted to know if he had a good sense of humor.  She tells me he does!
