Dr. Jack Kevorkian and the 'Right to Die' Debate

By Timothy D. Heard

It is your life; it is your right!

But should you choose to exercise this right, what you are doing is wrong.

I am not an advocate of euthanasia--and definitely not blatant suicide. I believe that should you choose to end your own life, directly or indirectly, that the lower depths of the afterlife await you.

Every aspect of our lives revolves around God. God created us and put us on this earth. Although He allows our lives to follow their natural courses, He and only He, retains the right to remove us. The Bible states that one man shall not take the life of another or that of his own: “Thou shalt not kill” (Deuteronomy 5:17). There are many aspects of our lives that can potentially keep us from the upper ranks of the afterlife following an unplanned or unwanted departure from this earth. But the most direct path to the depths below is suicide. It is unfortunate that by the time one realizes this, it is too late.

Dr. Jack Kevorkian, or “Doctor Death” as many have called him, is the living definition of The Devil's Advocate. I pity him. He has obviously not yet realized the extreme error of his ways, and I can only pray that he does before he himself is reunited with all of his patients.

Euthanasia is considered the humane solution for ending a painful or vegetative state of health, the ending of a life in which the patient or the family has decided no longer retains any reason for being sustained, due to a physical or mental medical state. I do sympathize with terminally ill patients and their families. Sometimes death appears to be a welcome relief and ending to a deteriorated medical condition. If I did not know God, I may very well agree with them.

But such is not the case. I do know where life leads when it ceases and will not jeopardize my afterlife, no matter the circumstance. Whether I am just sick of living or my health is of a most unpleasant condition, I will not take my own life, assisted or unassisted or by any other method of suicide which bears a fanciful descriptive name in order to distract from recognizing it for what it really is (i.e. euthanasia). Whatever you choose to call it, it all boils down to self-destruction by way of death.

Death itself is sad enough without the existence of a professional doctor who has dedicated his career to assisting others in reaching this point. It is not just astonishing; it is despicable. The fact that there exists a human who will gladly help a person end his/her own life leaves much to be desired in the way of respect for mankind's morality.

Dr. Kevorkian, get a life!
