LETTERS
July 21, 2008
After weeks
and weeks of reading letters saying how Apostolics are not rising
up and producing quality music I must say my piece. Remember: we
have a very large movement. We have Apostolics who are producing
short movies,
we have Apostolics who are writing their own music and performing
in coffee
houses, we have Apostolics who are
writing for secular magazines, editors for magazines, and who knows
what else.
Anointing? Do
you feel the anointing in this song?
It was written by a Gateway College of Evangelism student. Who knows
what else is out there? Unfortunately, we just have not spread this
news like we could. There are untold talents who are wishing to
tell more people about Jesus than just in their small area. That
is what ninetyandine.com
has striven to do--to highlight what believers are doing for the
Kingdom, whether it be through music, drama, writing, or creative
ways of evangelism. The reality is that we are not everywhere and
we rely on others to tell us about such talents. Now I want to hear
what you have to say. God Bless! ~nita
Re: “Intercessory
Prayer”
I read your
article Sunday night and was so convicted by it. I was hoping
to get an opportunity to have a copy for myself and this morning
when I came in to work, someone had sent me this by email.
Thank you so much for writing it. I hope to share it with
our church. Every word of this is so true and it is so sad.
But, I believe we can turn it around if enough of us will go back
to our first love and begin to pray as never before.

Re: “Apostolic
Music”
Here's my opinion
on Apostolic music. I feel like I get ripped off every time
I buy any. I buy two kinds of music: 1.) I buy
really good, catchy, professional music that I would not necessarily
expect to hear in church, but I like the songs and message.
I would put groups like Reliant K, Grits, Switchfoot, Hyperstatic
Union, and Building 429 in this category. There is no
Apostolic music of this sort. I would guess that is the case
because we don't encourage more modern sounds, and we don't have
the money / equipment to produce a high quality sound. There
is also a talent aspect that comes into play.
2.) I listen
to is what I would call “church music.” This is music that I buy
because I feel the anointing and I can use it in devotionals or
any other time I need something to bring me into the presence of
God. I would put artists like Donnie McClurkin, Nicole and
David Binion, Deitrick Haddon, Clint Brown, Israel Houghton, CHC,
Christ for the Nations, and others in this category. We Apostolics
should have tons of music like this, but sadly we don't. It's
not an issue of talent in writing songs as much as it is a lack
of anointing in singing them. Why are Charismatic singers
more anointed than Apostolic singers, in my opinion? Well,
for starters, most Apostolics record in cheap sound studios instead
of doing their music live. That kills the Spirit.
Also, it is
hard to be anointed when one is worried about sounding good and
becoming famous. I know that sounds odd--our music is bad
because we are too concerned with it being good. But, I think
that with the exception of Mark Condon and a few others, I don't
feel very much when I buy Apostolic music. Maybe somebody
else has a good reason. Ultimately, worship is from the heart.
A good worshiper is only trying to impress God.
A final note
about the style of Apostolic music--it needs to be simple and catchy.
Mark Condon does this very, very well in my opinion. But,
most other writers make their songs way too complicated and clumsy.
If I can't learn the song in about a minute or two, or by the time
you get through the chorus a second time, it will not be a good
worship song.
We also need
to realize that in the 21st century, Pentecost has spread beyond
the South. I know many of our good brothers and sisters are
there, but not all of us like corny, country music like “ain't no
devil in hell gonna walk on the Jesus in me” or some other such
nonsense I have heard. If it is corny, it is distracting.
I hope some
Apostolic musicians read this and take note because I would like
to buy more Ap music, and we should be making it great. We
just aren't yet.
