Strive, a band
comprised of Derick Thompson, Will Puth and Rick Kluckow, have produced
a unique CD appropriately named Fire. Though coupled with
the likes of U2 and Switchfoot, Strive has created a CD with a slight
touch of country, classic drums, prominent piano, and the infinite
classic twang of the guitar. Strive personifies its own sense of
meaningful lyrics and almost predictable music through songs such
as “Silent like a Secret” and “Fire.”
Though called
Fire, I'd suggest that “Just a Little More Time” is the most
relevant song to people today. It welcomes an electric guitar and
leading piano solo as it begins the album. Thompson blares out “Face
your fears” while addressing numerous issues facing Christians
today and exploring the things which may be holding us back. The
chorus then proceeds to sound almost 1980s with its slight techno
beat. His vocals can be described as “akin to Josh Groban with a
little Michael Bolton thrown in.”
The lyrics throughout
the songs on Fire are amazing and relevant; however, the
style is not quite as appealing. It's stereotypical in relation
to the country beat with which most of the songs are performed.
It's as if they heard Switchfoot and U2 and found a way to combine
both and put Christian lyrics to it. If you like the country genre
and quirky double meanings to lyrics, then this is the CD for you.
For those who enjoy good lyrics and a unique sound, bypass it.
The website
states their mission statement: "We
want to inspire people to find out what they are passionate about,
and then use those passions to make the world a better place.” They
realize that the music they have produced is a blur between the
country and pop genre with the comment that “If the lyrics and melodies
touch you, it's less important what musical genre it comes from."
They aim for their music to be “uplifting, soothing, and comfortable.”
They have accomplished their purpose with Fire.
For Strive,
“it's not a win to be successful only in the U.S. We'd like to see
ourselves successful in places like Brazil and New Zealand and Uganda.”
Reaching from Chicago to Africa, Strive is on the fast track to
becoming a successful band.
