Who Am I Daddy?

“Who am I, Daddy?” my son just turned three.

“Well, Son, you’re a product of Mommy and me,

To us you’re an angel, a gift from above,

To train up and care for and shower with love.”

“Who am I, Daddy?” my son just turned ten.

“My boy, you and Daddy are big strong ‘he-men’,

There’s nothing we can’t overcome if we try,

But don’t ever get so tough that you can’t cry.”

“Who am I, Daddy?”, my son’s now sixteen.

“Dear boy, your potential is yet to be seen,

If you’ll just continue to follow what’s true,

Then nothing can stop or intimidate you.”

“Who am I, Daddy?” (my son’s now engaged.)

“Young Man, here’s some wisdom that comes from the aged,

Though things may not always go just as you wish,

Commitment and love will ensure wedded bliss.”

“Who am I, Daddy?” my son has a boy!

“Wow, Son, now you have your own bundle of joy,

Your son will become what you teach him through deeds,

It’s not ‘things’ he wants but it’s ‘you’ that he needs.”

“Who am I, Daddy?” my son’s job’s been lost.

“Now, Son, faith must overcome fear at all cost,

You must dig deep in your heart when life seems bad,

And recall the things I taught you as a lad.”

“Who am I, Daddy?” my son’s son is grown.

“Dear Son, you knew from the Lord he was on loan,

If you’ve done your job right then in time you’ll see,

Fruit from the seeds you’ve sown in your progeny.”

“Who am I, Daddy?” my son’s hair is gray.

“Listen, Son, I have prepared you for this day,

You’ve lived and you’ve learned for this moment in time,

To let all the wisdom you’ve gained through you shine.”

“Who am I, Daddy?” my son’s Dad is gone.

“My Child, one past midnight begins a new dawn,

At times when you feel alone look up to Me,

Your heavenly Father watching over thee.”

“Who are you, Daddy?” my son asked the Lord.

“My Son, I’ve been right here in Spirit and Word,

The Love that your earthly Dad showed through and through,

Was Me living through him as I’ve lived through you!”

“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

(Proverbs 22:6)
