Tread Softly

A few lines from a poem by William Butler Yeats read:

“But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.”

I hadn’t read Yeats’ words until several years after writing the following poem. The lines came to me in a moment of inspiration. Our dreams are so fragile. Too often we beat each other’s dreams into the ground without realizing where we walk.

Tread softly--
You tread upon my dreams.
My heart is soft from recent plowings,
And my dreams:
They are the tender blades
Emerging from the earth.
