Duct Tape, Dixie, and Me

I'm Back.... with a Fresh Duct Tape Use!

While the rest of the world has been coping with heat waves and storms, I've been spending quality time with my immediate family in sunny Florida. The highlight of the weekend was definitely getting to attend church Sunday as a family, a rare treat because of the distance factor.

Family/Church
I was reminded of a familiar debate that goes something like this: is it okay to skip church time to spend family time together? Or is family time best spent at church anyway?

Interestingly a visiting evangelist preached Sunday night on "the fear of God" and the importance of church for families. Service concluded with families coming to the altar together to pray. It was a special time for our family, and I can't imagine being anywhere else in that moment. So I guess it's clear where my vote is cast on the subject. But I'm open to debate. Log your comments.

On a Lighter Note
I also had a neat duct tape moment. Saturday I watched my brother work a two year-old horse. "Is that duct tape I see?!" I exclaimed to my Dad while staring across the pasture.

Sure enough, the horse's bridle (pictured below) has been duct taped to keep the bit secure and the leather from rubbing and blistering the horse's face. Guess the love of tape runs in the family.

I have mixed opinions about the family/church thing.

Recently, there was a family reunion and 2 (leadership) families from our church decided to go to it instead of coming to church that Sunday night. That knocked out 5 members of our 10 member choir. That same night there was a death in the family of a 3rd leadership couple which knocked out our main alto and the only drummer. The service totally tanked. I realize all too well that family emergencies take priority, but the reunion? could have been avoided. They have gone on to have 2 more reunions this year for the same family but just not on a Sunday. So 3 family reunions a year? Come on!!

    Rant over :)

I think that we are saying that going to a building to have a "service" is more important than fellowshiping with the body.

Having church as we know it today is a pretty modern form. Is everything we do in the name of "church" really Biblical? I'm not saying not to go to church, but don't think that going to a building and calling that church is the be all and end all to Christianity. After all aren't we all the temple of the Holy Spirit?

Hmmm.... just because the choir and drummer weren't there is no excuse for a service to "tank". The early church didn't have drummers... and the Spirit of God can move powerfully with no formal choir. I remember one very powerful move of the Holy Ghost one night when a winter storm knocked out our power. No instruments (all electronic) and no lights. We just sang and worshipped in the dark, and God moved mightily. So let them visit with family, and worship God with all your heart and strength, and those at the reunion will have missed out on the best service ever!!!

And perhaps those attending the reunion will touch someone in their family whom they do not often see....

Oh trust me, I'm with the dissenters, I wish the service hadn't of tanked either. I guess it's more the morale hit when half of the church is missing in one fell swoop. Every part of the body is necessary, and that is what I think tanked the service, not the lack of drummer and lead singer.

Your body is the temple of the holy ghost, but in the book of Acts, the Apostles went from house to house in fellowship breaking bread with gladness. Even in the New Testament when Paul addresses the churches of Corinth, he is addresses modern day churches even as of today. Scripture tells us to forsake not the assembling together. The body, which is the body of Christ is fitly formed together, as God would have it. We all have a function and a purpose. If one of us were gone, it cannot function properly as it should. If your leg were gone, you cannot walk, right? The same goes for the church of the living God. People don't understand fully how it spiritually hinders God's chosen people when they make a habit of missing church on Sunday. Sunday is a day of celebration and worship for what He has done for us. If you want to go on family vacation, choose another day to dedicate that to your family. As far as winning your other family members to the Lord...you are not going to win anyone to the Lord when you aren't even commited enough yourself to go to the house of God......and YOU skip Sunday service for a family picnic. Come on now. How much do you REALLY want to keep your family out of hell???? We owe everything to Him. I'm not just preaching to the choir. I've been in church for only 6 years. My family is not saved and they have tried every route to get us to plan family functions during church times. WE WILL NOT SURRENDER TO THEIR SCHEDULE! Now they EXPECT us to go to church! Now THEY SCHEDULE their functions around us! Now that is God!

Who said church has to be on a Sunday. The Sabattah was originially on a Saturday. No where does it tell you to be in church once a week at a specific time. We have institutionalized church to a point that it hurts more than heals. Also, God is not going to send you to hell for missing a church service to attend a family picnic. We should try to have healthy family relations. That may be the exact way to win lost family to the Lord. Show them that you love them enough to spend time with them.
