Duct Tape and Flip Flops? Hmm…

The Great Flip Flop Debate
Northwestern’s champion ladies’ lacrosse team recently visited the White House. Four of the girls in the picture wore dressy flip flops. In so doing, they were thronged with criticism over the thongs. Turns out lots of folks don’t consider flip flops dressy. I’m hurt because I have a great pair of black flip flops with sequins that I just love, and I’m really planning on wearing them the next time I brunch with the Bush family.
This all reminds me of conversations I have with my mother regularly. My Mom is not very wild about the idea of t-shirts, jeans (pants/skirts), and/or flip flops on church grounds. This presents a problem because I’m usually at the church almost every night of the week. I’m discomforted by the thought that God may strike me with lightning if I swing by choir practice in my flip flops. Now in all fairness to my mother, she is thinking more along the lines of service times and she would never say a word regardless. But it’s a big deal to some people. I’m very confused. I think there’s nothing cuter on Sunday morning than a summer outfit topped off with sparkly sandals. What’s the consensus? Are flip flops a no-no for church? Maybe this is a generation gap thing?
Okay, so this also reminds me of the old Sunday morning / Sunday night debate. My parents come from the days when Sunday morning was THE dressy service. Sunday night was more of an afterthought—fashion-wise, that is. So they think nothing of a suit on Sunday morning and then basic shirt and skirt/slacks Sunday night. My friends and I, however, think of a.m. as the basic skirt and flip flops service, whereas Sunday night is the time to pull out the heels, new purse, and best suit. Who’s right?
Duct Tape Use #126
Once again, duct tape saves the day. My good friends Mandy and Hilary Naquin send this in from Arizona. They were trying to carve a watermelon basket, and the melon split during their creation. No problem. They broke out the duct tape and kept right on carving. You gotta see this, folks:

So flip-flops for church huh? I was always brought up that you always look your best for Jesus. I mean why wouldn't you want to look your best when you go to the church house. Anywho, I think that just doind errands to and from the church and minor events are no big deal when it comes to wearing "slippas" (as we say back home)But as far as service goes try to look your best, and you should always listen to what your pastor says!!!
As far as the sunday morning and night apparel. I always think that Sunday night is the big HOOPLA! I on the other hand sometimes feel like wearing my best on Sunday morning. I don't think that there is an actual science to it. I think if you feel like wearing the full get out at either service then do so...you are your own fashion police after all.
We are honored that you would choose to use our humble little duct tape usage #114! Remember to wipe the extra watermelon juice that is pouring from the rift like a ripped jugular vein before carefully applying the duct tape!
FLIP FLOPS rock at church or running errands! I wouldn't wear them on the platform but I think an occassional flip or flop doesn't hurt anything on Sunday mornings (Since in DS you're in class more than the sanctuary) or Wednesday nights to H2O.
In the infamous words of Napoleon Dynamite:
My favorite animal is practically a liger!
"looking your best" is American tradition, a cultural artifact, not something that's scripturally sanctioned. That's not saying it's bad, and in regions where you're expected to look the part you should.
In Colorado, "looking your best" means you showered and combed your hair. I exagerate a little, but hose and hair up (on ladies) and good suits and fancy ties (on men) are completely optional here.
Anyway, about flip flops. Some of the teens and young adults wear them to church. My pastor wears Crocs to church and slips into dressy shoes right when service starts, when he doesn't forget to change his shoes.
America should give the White House flip-floppers a break. I am sure they were on vacation. Who would go sight-seeing in hose and heels? Invite these girls back to a White House Gala. I guarentee, they will show up dressed to knock your lights out.
Being 'Over the Hill,' at 41, I don't wear flip-flops to church. However, I see no problem with those that do. However, I agree, it seems more respectful to not wear them on the platform. If you are going to wear them in public, please be sure your nails are trimmed and clean. :)
i wear flip flops to tues night prayer and sometimes wed night bible study. i would never wear them on the platform, but we do wear sandals, with and without heels or backs on them. they wore sandals in the bible days, for goodness sake! i think looking your best doesnt necessarily mean that you have to wear a prom dress and stilettos to church. it does mean you should be cleaned up and presentable. i guess the problem is in what various people view as presentable......
No prob with flip-flops (or Birks for that matter). I have wore Birks to early morning prayer, but wouldn't wear them to preach in.
