Service? On Christmas? - rdf

So Christmas falls on a Sunday this year, how divinely interesting! Churches across the nation have no doubt debated the merits of holding services, or not, and those within our fellowship are no different, I'm sure.

So will your church be holding services Sunday, December 25th? And if so, will YOU be there?

Received this NYTimes link from a highly confidential blogging informant (thanks, Kent ... oops!), When Christmas Falls on Sunday, Megachurches Take the Day Off

As the article mentions, many times churches of this size (~20,000 members) are accused of being "theology lite" (tastes great, less filling). So if any of our churches have decided to forego their regular services, does it make us guilty by association, and "theology lite" also? Or are we "progressive," as they call it?

As blogs aren't really supposed to regurgitate the news, but rather offer opinions about it, my opinion is ... that I don't really have one.

Every church is different, and the pastor of each church has the authority and best knowledge of his congregation to schedule service(s) on the 25th, or not. In some churches it might be nigh-blasphemy NOT to hold service, while in another church it could alienate much of the congregation.

To say that I don't have an opinion may not be entirely accurate. My opinion is ... support your pastor whatever his decision may be, and for the sake of all that's holy, don't murmur or complain about his decision.

This Sunday, December 25th, there will be those who enjoy wonderful services in their churches, and there will be those who enjoy wonderful "small-group-like" services in their homes. I've been among the former group, and this year, I'll be among the latter group.
One way or another, though, everyone should be in "service."

Our church is cancelling for Christmas day because our Sunday am service is only for kids, we bus in about 60-80 kids weekly, and of course no kid is coming to church on Christmas morning! Plus, an added benefit is our Pastor's anniversary is 2 days before Christmas, so there's usually a service cancellation sometime in the week before/of Christmas. I'd like to sound all holy and spiritual and say I'd rather be in the house of God than my mom's house, but it's just not true on Christmas day.
