Amazing Witness

Here is a great follow-up column on the Atlanta courthouse killing spree that shares exactly what happened in the killer's last few hours as a free man. Ashley Smith is an incredible woman. She's 26 years old with a five year old daughter. Her husband died four years ago, which means she was left widowed at 22 with a 1 year old daughter. I hope she writes a book because I'd love to read more about her story.

Sick and Tired

I can't believe it but I just got over being sick AGAIN! I'm so sick and tired of being sick! My family has been sick more times this year than we ever have. I just logged on for the first time in a few days and I have 93 new emails. Aaack! Who cares about work or family, I can't afford to get sick just to keep from getting behind on my emails!

Unusual Commute

Sometimes I get so sick of the news because it's always so much about death and despair. But here is a great little story about a girl with an unusual commute to school. They need more news like this!

Just Between Friends

If you live in Arkansas, California, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas or Washington, check out the website for Just Between Friends. It's a consignment sale for children, teen and maternity clothes that happens twice per year (Spring and Fall) in different towns in the listed states.

I just attended one in Fort Worth that was awesome! Olivia got thirteen brand name outfits for spring/summer and a pair of good quality shoes for $38 total. There's another JBF sale coming up next month in Arlington, the next town over from Fort Worth, and I'm signing up to sell some of her old clothes there. Maybe we'll make a little moolah to cover her current wardrobe. Who knew children needed so many clothes?

Christians Not Parenting Differently than Others?

A very interesting study by the Barna Group shows that there is very little to no difference in the way born again Christians parent their children as compared to non-Christian parents.

One of the most startling observations, according to Barna, was how few
born again parents indicated that one of the most important outcomes parents
needed to help their children grasp was salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. “Only three out of ten born again parents included the salvation of their child in the list of critical parental emphases,” he noted. “Parents cannot force or ensure that their kids become followers of Christ. But for that emphasis to not be on the radar screen of most Christian parents is a significant reason why most Americans never embrace Jesus Christ as their savior. We know that parents still have a huge influence on the choices their children make, and we also know that most people either accept Christ
when they are young or not at all. The fact that most Christian parents overlook this critical responsibility is one of the biggest challenges to the Christian Church.”

Isn't this hard to believe?! If this study is an indicator of the way Christians are parenting, maybe the church needs to start focusing more on teaching parents how to teach their children about spiritual matters and the importance of teaching those things to their children. Preserving the souls of the next generation should be a top priority of the church. It's not the church's job to parent these children, but the church could start doing more to teach parents how to make spiritual teaching a part of their parenting skills.

As a mother, it makes me think that before we start emphasizing so much about foreign missions, or even home missions, maybe we should start focusing on preserving the next generation for God. I know all souls are equally important to God and He is no respector of persons, but I'm not God. (I'm sure you're not shocked by that revelation :-) My daughter's soul is more important to me than some unknown Taiwanese person or Malaysian person or the souls of my coworkers or even my extended family.

There's a lot of dispute among Christian circles about whether we'll actually know one another in heaven, but on the chance that we will be aware of our past identities, I REALLY want Olivia to be there. More to the point, I don't want her spending eternity any where else but Heaven, whether I'm there or not.

Just as an aside, organizations like Focus on the Family, Family Life Today (check out their Resurrection Eggs for Easter) and the Pentecostal Publishing House have some great resources on teaching children about spiritual things. Encourage the Christian parents you know with some of these resources!

Beauty Advice

If you haven't caught it yet, there's a great piece on Ninetyandnine.com on Biblical Beauty Advice. I like it because it reminded me of a word I heard years ago at a Bill Gothard seminar in high school. Since I attended a Christian school, we got extra credit for attending this seminar and it was really life changing for me. The principles he taught were very conservative and rooted in the wisdom of the Word. One of the principles he taught that really stuck with me was if you want to be beautiful, just smile.

As teenagers, many people go through awkward stages, but mine was about 12 years long. I had glasses, retainers, was 5'6" and 105 lbs (a bean pole), and was smart, which out of everything was probably the biggest reason I was made fun of. At his seminar, Bill Gothard told a story about a woman who was so downcast and depressed and she came to him asking him why God had made her so unattractive. He told her to just start smiling and to see if that made a difference. He said some time later she came up to him and even he couldn't believe how much more attractive she was. Just changing her countenance and attitude had made a huge difference in her appearance.

Today's society glamourizes plastic surgery and pushes that you can be a better you with a little work. So, it's nice to be reminded that if you live a Godly life and work to be beautiful on the inside, your attitude and clean life will shine through and make you a more attractive person.

Everyday Miracles Part II

The other great story I heard Sunday was from a friend of mine, Faith Cook. Faith had some sort of skin irritation on her finger and tried treating it herself for several weeks with different over-the-counter stuff, all to no avail. Finally she went to the dermatologist to get it checked out. He took a look at it and said, "Looks like excema, here's a prescription for a steroid cream. Use it for a week, then come back and let me take a look at it."

She did what he said, came back in a week, and when he came into the room, he looked at her chart and said, "Mrs. Cook, I see you're here to get a full body check today." She was puzzled and she held up her finger and said, "No, I'm here for a finger check." He said, "No, I have you down for a full body check." She started to argue with him when she felt a check in her spirit and felt the Lord telling her to go ahead and get checked.

In the full body check, the doctor found three places he didn't like and wanted to biopsy each of them. On this past Tuesday, he called her and said one of the places from the back of her thigh (which she hadn't even known was there) was melanoma, but it was in the extremely early stages, was still very superficial on the skin and was nothing to worry about. After another procedure to cut some more tissue out, she would be cancer-free!

Isn't that amazing?! And even more cool is that after this happened, her finger cleared up completely, and she had already quit using the cream because it wasn't doing any good. God used that just to get her to the doctor so he could find the cancer before it got too bad. Our God still works miracles!!!

Everyday Miracle Part I

Today at church I heard two awesome stories of God's favor being on His children's lives. The first story was the head of our pantry ministry that gives food and clothes to the needy had a need in her own life. She's an elderly woman who's bathroom floor was basically rotting away. She prayed and told God that she didn't know how she was going to get it fixed since she has no one to help her with such things and not enough money to pay someone else to do it.

Well, amazingly, a business man in our church came up to her a few weeks ago and told her, "God has laid it on my heart to bless you and to ask you if you have need of anything." Her pride swelled and she told the man she didn't need anything. After the exchange she began to feel so guilty, knowing that she did indeed have need of something, and something very specific that she had prayed about. She called our pastor and told him the situation and he told her to get over her pride, call the businessman, apologize to him, and tell him what she needed.

She did so and now she has a brand new bathroom floor! Isn't God amazing?!

I have another story of God's miracle-working power, but I'll have to post it later because my husband and daughter are waiting on me to leave. Stay tuned for Part II!
