on accountability and internet ads - rdf
I received this email in response to one of my recent posts containing a link to an external article ...
Careful! I clicked on the link to the article, and the ad on the right hand side of the article had a VERY provocative female picture that many Christians would not particularly care to see.....
I appreciate this brother or sister looking out for me and others in cyberspace. We will always do well to hold each other accountable, and to submit ourselves to such accountability.
As a bit of a technical PSA, internet ads are refreshed with each page load, as such it's virtually impossible to know what ads will appear on what page. In the event that you come across an ad that you find distasteful or provocative, clicking the Refresh button on your browser, or pressing F5 on your keyboard, will reload the web page, and very likely present a different ad.

plane perspective - rdf
My 4-year-old son, Ryland, has recently taken an interest in paper airplanes. Nearly everyday lately and sometimes multiple times a day, he'll approach me with some single sheet of paper he's found somewhere--Sunday School handout, colored construction paper, neighborhood flyer, the deed to our house--asking me to make him an airplane.
Now the thing is I've taken no classes in origami, nor am I an aerodynamics engineer, so my paper airplanes are rather rudimentary. My standby is the classic dart airplane, so time and again Ryland ends up with one of these ...

... the thing is, as simple as the design is, he never seems put off by it. In fact, as I fold it up, he often dances around gleefully likes it's Christmas morning and can't wait to get his hands on it. It may be because what I see as the above, he sees as this ...

... and it struck me that often the things we see as incredible and miraculous and grandiose may well be among the most simple things our Father does for us.
No, we should never lose our anticipation and awe at the things He works, but perhaps in realizing how simple even the greatest things are for Him, our anticipation and awe might grow even greater.

we're #1! - rdf
I hate to brag, living in Detroit and all, but for those who missed this breaking article last month from consumeraffairs.com ... we're #1, woo-hoo, in yer face LA and Philly!

game on! - rdf
Can't say I'm much of a fan of Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm (D), but for perhaps the first time, we're on the same page ...
Michigan Governor Signs Gaming Bill Into Law
... this is long overdue, and I'm glad to see that the fines actually have teeth (highest in the country!). And this while similar legislation in California sits on Shwarzenegger's desk waiting for his signature or veto. (Who's the Govinator now, Ahhhnold?) Go get 'em J-Gran.

Enforcing it of course will likely be a whole different game.

katrina - rdf
I have for the last week purposely avoided posting anything re: Katrina. I hope that my avoidance has not been interpreted as a lack of care on my part. There has been, and will be, so much said, what more could I add? ...
Have you ever experienced moments that were so emotionally overwhelming that you're at a loss as to how to respond? Like you lack the emotional capacity to grasp the gravity of the situation? You fumble even trying to relate?
When I saw, live on TV, the first of the two Trade Towers collapse ... that was one of those moments. Hearing the news and seeing the images of Katrina has had the same effect.
And in those moments, I find it hard not to ... disconnect. My emotions fail me, and so in an effort to try and "deal" with a situation which I am unable to "fix," my natural tendency is to disconnect. It's dangerous to think that our default tendencies are somehow the right ones.
The fight against my emotional constipation is barely worth mentioning in the same sentence as those fighting for their lives, families, and homes. But I share it because maybe I'm not the only one, and God forbid you or I stop fighting with them.
