PSA - rdf

With the General Conference of the UPCI beginning Wednesday of this coming week, we will once again be treated to a GROUP BLOG!

I'll be continuing the "A Month In The Life," but will likely add my $0.02 in response to the posts coming out of Richmond, VA.

more smarter - rdf

The title of this article caught my eye today ...

Are We Getting Smarter or Dumber?

... and upon seeing such a title, perhaps you, as I was, hoped to actually get an answer to this rather intriguing question. However the upshot of all the ivory tower scientific jargon and talk of our brains growing and morphing (so that's the reason I get headaches: it's not the caffiene withdrawal, it's that my brain is too big for my skull) ... yes, the answer to "are we getting smarter or dumber?" is
*Spoiler Warning!* we don't know. Oh, what wonderful irony.

In a rather succinct article describing postmodernism, Toward a Theological Understanding of Postmodernism, Daniel J. Adams lists the "intellectual marketplace" as the third characteristic of our postmodern age. Which is more or less the only thing the pointy heads can tell us: there's more information to be had today than ever before and greater access to it, so this might make us smarter ... or not.

hurting, i cannot cry
jealous of this breath

addendum - rdf

Yesterday's post was, of course, not meant to rag on my wife (she thought it hilarious that she was the brunt of my post), but to point out that we all have moments that we choose the lesser things, the low road, the easy way, and that the Lord in his gracious lovingkindness catches us on these things and gently reminds us to do that which is right, despite our feelings. (Though if his gentleness doesn't work, He may use a big club.)

My wife did of course go to Ladies Prayer and was very glad she did.

oops - rdf

"Sorry, ninety and nine flock," he said sheepishly, "baa, baa, baaaaaaa, baaaa, bah, buhbaaa."

(Roughly translated: Oops, I neglected to post yesterday, my humble apologies.)

So I get home tonight and nonchalantly mention to my wife, as a reminder, that it's Ladies Prayer at the church this evening. Though I'm sure she knows my point in mentioning it (we've been married 8 years), her response is nonetheless noncommittal.

A short time later she comes into the bedroom where I'm lying down trying to squeeze in a 15-20 minute late-afternoon power nap, and mentions that she doesn't think she's going to prayer tonight. I answer, "oh?", and resist the temptation to say more, but inside I'm siccing the the Spirit of conviction on her--get 'er Lord, get 'er!

Moments later the phone rings. It's our pastor's wife--hallelujah, He's answering my prayer already!--not corralling ladies to prayer, because that's not her style, but just wondering IF my wife were going to be at prayer, since she'd hoped to meet with the wives of the ministry team that evening. With only the faintest hint of self-righteousness (those married know the delicateness of just this moment, and that you're allowed a smidgen of self-righteousness, but no more) I hand my wife the phone. "Yes, I'd thought about going," my wife says diplomatically. I stifle my smile, but inside I'm dancing a little jig--He got ya, He got ya, nyah, nyah, nyah, nyah, nyah, nyah!

This was all very amusing of course then, and even now as I retell it ...

... it probably won't be quite so when it happens to me next. Then it'll be, "Oops, yeah, Lord, ya got me ... thank you."
