I said I was done with pictures and I was. I did not take any new ones on Saturday, but here are some left over from Friday. Since we have some FM lovers in the audience I thought I put some more up.

GC Fashion: Saturday PM - kdc

Okay, GC isn't NAYC, but there was one...interesting outfit worth clicking Saturday night. I'm not sure if this is a Princess Leia tribute or Pentecostal Prom gown, but it certainly got the desired attention...

There was one obvious shoe fashion, though it didn't predominate by any means - bows or some fancy straps / ribbons around the ankles.

From the Cyber Cafe - Sat night

At the cyber cafe. Today was my death row schedule - 9 am.-3 p.m. at PPH booth, then 3-7 pm at WAP & 9-11 pm at WAP. The odd thing is both divisions say they like me...

Whatever the case, thank God Jacob wasn't nearby because I would've happily sold my birthright today for a La-Z-boy or a new pair of feet.

* I've heard no crowd estimates over 10,000 w/several in the 8,000 people range. I'm told the Colesium holds 13,000 total, before our reduced service configuration...

* The King's Clown reported 15 children receiving the Holy Ghost today.

* Keyboard keys are sticking, so I apologize for any typos...

* Low social interaction - the people who ae here ae the people who always come to GC. It feels odd. Granted, my Ap friends on the East coast aren't as numerous as those elsewhere, but Youth Congress seems to have sucked the under 35, non-minister crowd away.

* A brilliant African missionary (sorry, dn't know his/her name) is raising funds by selling "marshmellow" guns (out of PVC piping). So far he's sold over 200! Marshmellows are being found in the oddest places...

* They've opened up the booth area to non-WEC ministies who are approved (& willing to pay the $). It's nice to see the Azuza Street Riders, IBC Perspectives, Angel Food & others highlighting their services.

* With the varied booths & high-volume PMA stage & boisterous SS services & blaring plasma screens at PPH, the exhibit area feels much more like a trade show - which isn't a bad thing. It's just a new thing.

* The Ladies Ministry booth was so homey, with a couch, etc. that one gentleman plopped himself down on it & slept for maybe an hour. I could've snapped a pic, but didn't want to embarass him...

* I always bring too many books to these things, thinking I'll have hours to read. As a Jornalism major, I spent the next 10 years after graduation reading mags & newspapers of every type. (When we were first married my longsuffering wife & I subscribed to 10 dif mags.) In the last 3-5 years I've read almost exclusively books, listened to audio books or teaching tapes & simply scan mags (except for Sports Illustrated during football season) & ignore newspapers (when it became obvious the local Post-Dispatch was a newsless rag). On trips therefore, I'll end up succumbing to information gorge, swallowing large chunks of any newspaper (USA Today, Richmond Free Press, but especially the Wall Street Journal because it puts my brain in a different mindset than it's used to due to the business slant) whole. That's where I am at present & it's been good for me. I've read maybe 4 USAs, 4 WSJs, & got a Richmond to go...

* Yesterday morning, as I awaited the first shuttle of the morn, an acquaintance said, "You know, you can get sleep at these things." I didn't realize I looked that bad.

My feet hurt - bmyers

My feet hurt and I have bags under my eyes from lack of sleep, but that's what conference is all about. I saw a lady yesterday wearing her pink house slippers. Not a bad idea.

Yesterday's services were wonderful. I always love the youth service and they didn't let me down this year. Calvin Jean was scheduled to preach, but was sick, so Brent Brosam was asked to speak. He has one of he most humble spirits and as usual, he preached magnificently. His sermon title was, "I Among the Captives". Buy the CD - you'll enjoy it.

The Foreign Missions service is always my favorite and I always cry buckets. Brother Mooney and Brother Pasley did a splendid job of co-MCing the service. Their task was to raise one million dollars to pay off missionary account deficits caused by the lagging US dollar overseas. (Let me just say - if anyone has a problem with raising money for the missionaries, you need to first of all pray, then sit down with a missionary and listen to his burden and his desire to serve the nations of the world. Your next step should be to get your checkbook out and give till it hurts, as these missionaries do.) Okay, enough preaching.

Someone came up with the brilliant idea to get pledges before the conference, so that speeded the process up quite a bit. It seems like the money came in very quickly this year. The idea to have a toll free number for people to call in pledges was also new this year. What a new and exciting way for foreign missions to raise lots of money. Speaking of lots of money being given, one anonymous donor gave $200,000. Wonder who it was???? I have it from a FM official that they raised $1.1 million to help with the deficit and $1 million in PIM pledges. It really was a miracle. Sister Nona Freeman, veteran missionary, was brought to the pulpit. She had to be helped across the stage, and when she first started speaking, her voice seemed so weak. But soon, her voice got stronger as she spoke of years in Africa and she didn't so feeble.

Scott Graham preached a brilliant message on the Danger of Your Testimony - a message that everyone needs to hear. Bro. Graham stated that approximately 20% of UPCI churches do not give to Foreign Missions. This is a very telling statistic! At the conclusion of his sermon, Brother Howell asked Sis. Else Lund, retired missionary to speak. She retired recently because of her health. She said of Africa, "I could live here forever." He brought her shoes out and sat them on a table. He asked if there was anyone who would come forward and be willing to fill her shoes. He then brought out Sis. Freeman and asked the same question. He asked Jonathan Suber to come up to represent his dad who recently passed away. He placed Brother Paul Suber's shoes on the table and asked the same question. Is there was anyone who would come fill his shoes? Several other retired missionaries were brought to the platform who have had to retire for various health reasons - all of them still have the missions burden and would love to be on the field. It was a very moving close to a very powerful service. It seemed to no one was in a hurry to leave.

Don't know how many people are attending the conference, but I heard one official say they estimated about 10,000. A lot of young people doing the hall thing (and older folks too!) And it seems that every woman here has a big feather either pinned to her dress, in her hair or on her purse. One friend told me that the bigger the feather, the smaller your body looks. Sounds logical to me! It seems that hose are out too. Multitudes of women in their nice suits and high heels with no hose. And it's not just young girls, but lots of well known ministers' wives. Lots of funky glasses - I saw one pair that were yellow with brown dots. Definitely made me look twice.

For those with children at conference, you know how wearing it can be to have kids in these marathon services. I have a suggestion. How about having a children's crusade/children's church during the day while the adults are in the the various services? Usually there's one big service per day and there's plenty of children's ministers in attendance that could conduct the services. Just an idea! The Sunday School department does a great job with the children. They have children's church every afternoon in the exhibit area - we couldn't tear my daughter away. She loved all of the clowns, puppets and other folks that spoke. They all do a fantastic job - 14 children got the Holy Ghost this afternoon.

Gotta run. More later.

Just What We Needed - ach

Here I was, figuring that if I went and talked about last night's service, I would be the last among many who have already given you the details. Alas, I see I may be the first.

Let me start off saying that I believe I heard the BEST, most POWERFUL message I have ever heard in my life last night. That is no exaggeration. The "preacher of the night" (whose name has slipped my mind) stirred us all into examining ourselves. Using the story of the man at the pool of Bethesda, Jesus asked him (paraphrasing) how long he had been sitting there. "Thirty-eight years," was the reply. "Why have you not gotten in?" "Because I have no MAN to help me." (Emphasis is mine.) If that man had been sitting there all those years, and if the angel had only troubled the waters once every year, then there would have been 38 people healed since that man had arrived. The question posed was "where were the 38 men?" How could they leave those there knowing that the waters (healing) worked? How when they knew the conditions living there? How?? Yet, how many people come out of the waters and leave behind those others still lying there? How many get together with others who have also been healed and talk about the healing, but only with those who have already experienced it? How long does it take for those memories of what is was like BEFORE to slip our mind?

It was a challenge and a wake-up call that I have to say I needed!!

Will post more tonight. Glad everyone else is providing all the footage of pics that I can't (packing at midnight the night before you leave often causes one to forget things....such as cameras).

Photographer For Hire - SJC

Now that I have established my reputation as a photographer, I will be available (for hire) for weddings, family portraits, and senior pictures. I know, don't quit my day job just yet.

I will try to write something of substance sometime later on Saturday. I'm done with picture taking (did I hear a collective cyber-space amen?) except for possibly trying to get some photos of the late night youth crowd in the lobby. No promises there....

This blog stuff is a lot of work! My hat's off (and my

I am posting some pics, but as you can see I'm not a great photographer. However, Kent has assured me that people are not looking for great shots they are looking for atmosphere. So here goes:

Not sure how many people where there tonight, but it was more than last night.

As veteran GC goers know, there are two distinct activities at the arena - what goes on in the arena and what goes on in the halls outside the
arena.

Can't have a GC without a popcorn stand!

The booths seem more varied and interesting this year, due to topic & creativity. Some samples include the AQUA (Apostolic Quartets) booth, the Herald booth (middle), the Word Aflame Publications (WAP) booth (bottom).

Okay, the captions should be below each picture, but for some reason Blogger isn't allowing that & frankly I'm just thrilled to upload multiple pictures together, so I shan't complain.

Ponderings - ach

I'm hoping no one saw the entry I accidently just posted that had no words. Well, I have to apologize to everyone out there about the slackness in which I have posted. "All the best intentions of mice and men..." I have tried to post once prior to now and blogger was down.

Well, what exciting and interesting news could I garnish to make this read worth your time? Everyone probably read the entries from Youth Congress and saw the pics of IBC's interesting advertisement. As I wasn't there, this was my first time to see them in person. Pretty smart.

As I type, youth service is going on across the street. I sat in service for about 20 minutes before I made my exit. It was for the reasons that I generally dislike. They go on FOREVER in regards to offerings...who gave what. I don't understand all that. Sometimes I feel as if people are made to feel as if they have to give...guilt giving. That is NOT how God desires it!! Some people give out of guilt; others have moved on and give out of need, but God desires us to give cheerfully...out of a want to give! We WANT to give for all He has done for us and blessed us with. Lord, give us a spirit that there is so much giving that, like those they eventually had to tell them to stop bringing materials for the tabernacle because there was a over-abundance, let us have that same heart.

Service last night was wonderful, as I'm sure you have already read. The only thing I can probably add is that you know God is trying to get through to us. So many people I heard last night, myself included, were saying the the verses he preached on had just been preached in their own churches recently or it was what they were studying in their own private study. Lord, let us have ears to hear. But then let us not to stop there and be hearers of the Word, but to be doers of the Word.

Conference Update-bmyers

It's Friday already and Conference has been great. As you've probably already read, last night's service was wonderful - from beginning to end. They have praise singers that lead the congregation in worship - something new since the last conference I attended in Louisville. They were led by Joy Norris, and of course, she had some of UPC's finest helping her out. They all did a great job of helping to escorting the crowd into the presence of God. The platform changes are great. The back of the platform was banked with several columns with massive arrangements of palms and gladiolas - very classy. And again massive flower arrangements flanked each side of the steps leading up to the platform - palms with gladiola s and birds of paradise. Nice touch. The choir is now seated in the stadium seating directly behind the platform, rather than on the platform. Last night, the board members wives were seated on the platform with their husbands. That was a new changes for me.

Aqua Quartet sang last night - they have a good sound. But I was wondering - isn't a quartet usually made up of 4 people? There were 5. Maybe someone can explain that to me. Brother and Sis. Jesse Williams were honored during the service. He is retiring as Assistant General Superintendent - a position he's held for over 20 years.

The choir from Ron Libby's church in Gaithersburg, MD sang and brought the house down. They were magnificent. And then Brother Haney preached probably the finest message I've ever heard him preach - "My Father's Business". He began his sermon by reading a few facts about the wealth of the religious world - they now own amusement parks, golf courses, mega churches, publish millions of books and magazine, etc, but he went on to say that it is not the Father's business to build large companies and make millions. The Father's business is souls. Terrific message. He closed it by asking 4 General Board members to carry the Ark of the Covenant on their shoulders. Then he asked 8 men with their Bibles to surround the men carrying the Ark, to fight off the enemy. Several men cloaked in black robes and hoods then ran on the platform, trying to break through to the Ark. Each man had a sign on his back that represented sin - Apathy, Unholy, Materialism, Worldliness, Unbelief, Pleasure, etc. Very moving.

Now to carnal things. The Omni is a beautiful hotel, but I've had a few issues. When we checked in Wednesday evening, they were overbooked, so rather than a room with 2 double beds, we were given a small corner room with a Queen bed. And there were no cribs - so the 4 of us spent a miserable night crowded in a small bed. We were able to move to a much nicer room yesterday. Also, the hotel restaurant was not prepared for a large crowd, so when we tried to eat there after church Wednesday night, we were told it was a 30 minute wait and they didn't want to take our name. (There were 7 people in front of us - and maybe 20 people in the restaurant eating.) When we kept hanging around, they finally told us it would be better if we would just go to our rooms and order room service. So we did. Kent, I'm still waiting for my plate of fruit, crackers and cheese!

I have to agree that the Foreign Missions booth is by far the most beautiful, but then I'm a bit partial. I've been able to visit with so many missionaries. Brother and Sister Albert Stewart from Liberia are here - one of my favorite missionaries. They continually sacrifice everything to God - including their lives, to serve the people of Liberia.

We're on our way to the Youth Service. More later. . .

Some Resolution News - SJC

Although the majority of the resolutions that came, or are coming, before the business meeting would be too long to deal with in this blog, I will bring you one result you may be interested in. The first resolution that was brought concerned moving the annual General Conference to an every-other-year event. In other words, GC would take place every two years. All the departmental committees and the General Board would still have to meet yearly even if this happened. This was resoundingly defeated in a voice vote. I was not in favor of this resolution, the reason being..... well, it would take more time than I'm willing to give it right now. Maybe I'll write about it later this week. Hint: It has to do with living in Vermont.

After reading some of my lengthy blogs you're probably wondering how long I preach/teach for (Ok, so maybe you're not, but it doesn't really matter as I'm not going to spill the beans, so to speak). It varies and no doubt some of the people in the church I pastor, who are reading this blog, will post some comments and fill you in a little.

Good night, sleep tight and pleasant dreams to you.... (Lawrence Welk closing song - I told you I was "comfortably mature")

Exhaustion Begins to Settle In - SJC

Wow, am I ever tired! I get progressively more tired as the week goes on, as does probably most everyone else. I was able to connect with Kent for a late lunch/early dinner and we had a good time. He looked pretty frazzled himself. We were able to solve all the issues facing the UPCI in the 21st century, as well as discuss the role of 90 & 9 as being the primary "voice" of A/P with plenty of surplus funds to support their dedicated volunteer staff on a full-time basis. Well.... not quite, as I suspect you have probably already discerned, but we talked about a wide variety of subjects including how a couple of "comfortably mature" (euphemism for over-the-hill) people can relate to the 20-something crowd and bring them articles they are interested in.

I “suited up” for the first time today and even kept the top button of my shirt buttoned for most of the day (dinner with Kent excepted). I like that Southern California casual dress approach, but that’s a little out of place here. I finally made it to the display area around 2:15 p.m. and once again they have a good set-up. I think the classiest areas are the Foreign Missions displays; they are certainly the most colorful anyway. Business was brisk when I was there, although it was lighter after the evening service than I would have thought. Maybe this was due to the evening service getting done after 10 p.m. Bro. Haney preached a really good message, which if you didn’t catch via the live web cast I would encourage you to by the CD when it becomes available to order. His title: My Father’s Business. It was the kind of message (I believe) that needs to be heard at a General Conference from the General Superintendent.

I tried to take some good pictures of the display area, but alas, my lack of professional photographer skills hindered me from getting a really good shot. I’ll try again tomorrow… whoops, today as it is now 12:23 a.m. I’ll post one that I do have if you promise not to laugh too hard.

Nope, not that one.

Try this one.

(Kent's shot was better)

See, I told you i wasn't a photgrapher. Would you like to see a picture of the outside of my hotel? Just kidding!

A Few Details About a Few Things - kdc

It's late, I'm tired & there are still 2.5 days of booth work ahead of me, so this will be brief.

* Bro. Robert Fuller, currently administrative assistant to Bro. Kenneth Haney, was named Editor in Chief, replacing the retiring J.L. Hall.

* Bro. Haney was made acting/interim/temporary director of Harvestime/There's Hope For Today until their direction is set.

* A lady bought 3 cases of Bibles because of the Katrina refugees in her home and in a nearby shelter needed them.

* During the evening service there was no one but the workers and 3 heretics in the exhibit hall area.

* The Pentecostal Herald, which normally has subscriptions (I hope I get this right) around 30-35,000 monthly copies, had orders of a historic 91,000 (!) this month because it's a special "outreach" issue meant for non-Pentecostals. Churches bought dozens/hundreds of extras to distribute to their community. A great idea & major kudos to the editor, Simeon Young.

* After the evening service/exhibit time, someone on the hotel shuttle bus actually recognized me in the pitch dark of midnight because of my Word Aflame quarterly picture. Then again, maybe it's easier than I realize - my picture is in black and white...

* Okay, it's late! Give me a break! Russ, you forgot to post again (& no, there are no museum visits in my future. I'm sorrier about that than you). Stephen, lunch was grand. Enjoyed the conversation immensely. (Make sure you resize your pictures "web small" before trying to upload them. They all worked the first time for me tonight.)

And to all a good night...

I'm finally here! bmyers

We arrived yesterday evening after logging a few hours at work, frantically racing home to throw the last few items into the suitcase, pack the car and get on the road. We arrived downtown Richmond to find the streets filled with Pentecostals.

I had hoped to enjoy the concert last night, but after getting settled in our room (which is very small - more on that later), changing clothes and being shuttled to the coliseum, it was about 8:30 pm before we arrived at the service. To our surprise, it all ended 20 minutes ahead of schedule, so everything was over by 9 pm. I hear it was excellent!

I've seen so many friends. I can't believe how many of them are gray!!

We're running to eat now, but I'll fill you in on more later.

Wednesday Musings - SJC

In GC's past I have been involved in a departmental meeting on the first day of the conference. This year was different do to some position changes in our district; so for my first GC ever I did not have a board meeting to attend. I feel so.......free!!! So while others were working, or otherwise involved in meetings, I took the opportunity to scope out the area better. Both the convention center and the arena are close by to the Marriott, which is convenient for those of us who are staying here. I have figured out the interstate system to the point that I can find the good eateries and other amenities without driving through a thousand traffic lights; well I exaggerate a bit, but it seems like a lot of them.

As always, I am impressed by the sheer numbers of A/P people. We have nothing comparable to it in Vermont. In the lobby of the hotel I'm staying at, there is quite a collection of people at any given time - especially before a service or just after one. The Marriott has set-up a little area to sell sandwiches, chips, and a drink for those looking for something light to eat after service. Some people (predominantly young) are ordering pizza that gets delivered to the lobby. One thing I have noticed the several years I have attended GC, is the collection of young people in the hotel lobby late at night. I think this may be some kind of regular tradition, but I'm not really sure having attended my first GC when I was........ You can guess, but I was well past the age of most (yea, all?) of those I saw.

For those of you who might be wondering, I am not here with my wife and seven children. I am sharing a room with our district youth president (who is pretty easy to get along with, even if he is a Boston Red Sox fan) which helps to cut the costs. It will be a few years before my wife can accompany me to a GC due to all the activity in our household, which is alright with her since she is a homemaker in the original sense of the word. No offense intended to my roommate, but I would prefer to have her here with me!

My Glorious Life - kdc

So setup went all day. It's very tiring. Try to get out of it if you can.

Then I had a fabulous meal at the Tobacco Company (which actually did have a cigar girl ) with a host of friends. Actually, it's a legitimate top-notch restaurant that doesn't allow smoking. (I'm sure there's a story there somewhere.)

Now I'm genuinely tired.

However, I was able to join the Omni Hotel Club, which entitles me to 2 free drinks every morning (tomorrow I will be enjoying Hot Chocolate & Bottled Water between 8-8:15 a.m.), as well as a Wall Street Journal & USA Today. I also have my choice of foam or feather pillows. Who knew life was this good?

New & Different in the Exhibit Area: The Pentecostal Music Association (PMA) will be featuring 2 musical artists most every hour (15 mins each is my understanding). That should be interesting to enjoy. There appears to be a great diversity in musical styles, which is reassuring. (Fill in your own reason here: ____________ .)

New & Different in the World: Giant squid caught on camera.

It's HERE!! - ach

Well, I'm not yet at General Conference (GC). I couldn't take off all three days from work, as I have three days off also next week. I will be driving down to Richmond tomorrow morning. Thank God it is only about two hours away!

By Monday I could tell that GC time had arrived. I work in Washington DC and while I was walking from work to the train station yesterday and Monday, I passed church people. Yeah...Apostolics in DC!! It was funny. The first group I passed on Monday, we kind of did the 'size them up' look, determined they 'passed' and then did the head nod. By Tuesday when I saw more people, I walked up and talked to them. They had come in early and were doing the tourist-thing before GC.

I will be rushing around crazy tonight. I have yet to pack anything. I think this is the first conference EVER that I haven't gone out and bought all kinds of new things (clothes, hair whatchamacallits, etc...). I've been more or less laissez-faire about the whole thing. You ladies understand how it is. You rush out and spend all kinds of $$ for things that all of a sudden you just NEED. This year I am trying not to do that.

I should get back to work on a project my boss just gave me. Hope to see everyone at GC! More to come later.

Richmond: First Impressions - SJC

I arrived in Richmond around 5 p.m. Tuesday and checked into the Richmond Marriott. It was easy enough to find and it's right next to the convention center. I like to get the hotel closest to the action, so to speak. Given the area of town around the convention center, there might be some action we didn't bargain on. My first room had that stale A/C water smell, and the A/C wasn't working that well. So I got another room that didn't smell as bad and is right next to the elevators so I get to hear the rumble as they go by. Yes, I'm the guy who just posted about the Holocaust Museum making the things I complain about seem really petty. I just wanted my readers to know, that I knew, I had written that.

As long as I'm on my petty complaints, I should mention that most of the good eateries are around 12 to 15 miles away, depending on the route you take. Of course, I could eat at the hotel restaurant where I can get a 12 oz. New York Strip for only $29. I could go for the budget meal of Grilled Chicken Penne, with Wild Mushroom Cream Sauce, for a mere $12. The breakfast buffet is slightly higher at $12.95. I could do something spiritual like fast....

There is an actual Starbucks Coffee shop in the lobby of the hotel! I expect they'll do some good business over the next several days. While at GC in Phoenix, AZ, I was near the coffee kiosk selling Starbucks Coffee when someone walked by and said, "Starbucks! That's Pentecostal whiskey." Ok, so it is a little strong....

One of the highlights of my evening was seeing fellow blogger, and editor extraordinaire, Kent Curry. We plan on trying to get together for lunch or dinner on Thursday. Nothing like bribing your editor! Yes, Kent, this means I'll take care of the bill (Just what is the PPH per diem?). Did I mention he was dressed-up in a suit, while I was dressed in humbler attire - my tourist clothing, which is also my normal mode of dress (except Sundays, [certain] weddings, funerals, formal public events, and various meetings). As of Thursday morning I will don one of the three suits I brought with me and remain "suited" for the rest of the conference.

Holocaust Museum - SJC

Ok, so it's not about General Conference, but I wanted to write about it anyway. I spent around two and a half hours in the Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C. and found it to be a moving and sad experience. It can really make some of the things I complain about seem really petty. I read a lot about the Holocaust many years ago, and I have recently been looking into it again. I would encourage anyone who is going to D.C. this week (or anytime) to try to see it. I would suggest going early since tickets (which are free) are on a first come-first serve basis.

General Board Banquet - Exclusive!

If you've always wondered what occurs in a General Board Banquet, but don't have the "District Superintendent" or "UPCI Division Head" titles in your career path, then allow me to reveal the inner workings of this banquet.

* It only started 10 minutes late (5:10 p.m.) and ended 8 minutes (7:22 p.m.) before the next official General Board Meeting was to begin. They kept it tight.

* The official GC photographer takes pictures of everyone at every table.

* The entre was a slab of salmon and chicken breast with green beans and mashed potatoes. The salmon was delicious.

* Bro. Kenneth Haney, UPCI General Superintendent, began proceedings with Year 4's "Order of the Faith" awards. (This is a great idea! Basically, they honor the men and women who have made significant contributions to the Kingdom.) Tonight, they honored Howard Goss (UPCI's first General Superintendent), Calvin Rigdon (the UPCI official who created Sheaves for Christ while in the General Youth Division, and the BREAD program while heading the Sunday School Division), Harry Scism (long-time leader of UPCI's Foreign Missions division after being a missionary to India) and T.F. Tenney (national Youth and Foreign Missions official and long-time superintendent of the Louisiana District).

* The "Order of Faith" award format is simple. A bio is read of the honored person by an assistant general superintendent, then a cool plaque and medal is given to the recepient or their representative (since the first two died some time ago). For some reason the latter two stood in front of everyone in a black graduation gown with Haney while the bio was being read. The gown looked...odd? No one seemed to know why they were wearing said gowns, but it didn't detract from their faith-building accomplishments. I mean, these men were sold out for God!

A few highlights:
* Goss did all/most of the household chores when he was home to take the pressure off of his wife. This got some enthusiastic cheers from the women in the audience.
* On his honeymoon Harry and Audrene Scism went on deputation to raise funds for their trip to India.
* Early on Tenney decided to pray at least 1 hour every day (a habit he maintains) and study 3 chapters of the Bible every day (this in an era when there were few commentaries). Some nights he was up until 2-3 a.m. especially "when it was the 119th Psalm."
* I was struck by the puzzle-piece intricacies of the recepients. If I get this right, Rigdon led Youth, when he was replaced by Tenney in 1960. Tenney left Youth in 1968/69 for Foreign Missions (where he was followed by Haney), then left Foreign Missions in 1976 to pastor (where he was followed by Scism, who was cold-called and offered the top position - he just had to decide within 2 hours).

All were inspiring.

Then Haney said they were in the business of honoring at the banquet, not just the business of business as at the regular meetings. So he wanted to honor some servants of God who were retiring. He then called up (with their wives):

* Arless Glass, who spent 30 years as head of the Division of Education.

* J.L. Hall, who spent 30 years as "a rock," "a tremendous stabilizer" as editor-in-chief of all the UPCI's publications.

* Jesse Williams, a pastor and businessman with a "Caleb spirit" who was still "a kid" because he was giving up his position in part because his church is beginning a building program. Williams is stepping down from Assistant General Superintendent - Eastern Zone after 24 year.

* Marvin Curry was described by Haney as having "one of the most beautiful spirits" he had interacted with, especially after leading the Pentecostal Publishing House through many difficult times. After exactly 35 years of service to PPH, Curry had stepped down on May 3, 2005. Yea Dad!

All of the men were given a beautiful plaque with an inscription and an engraved eagle made out of precious metals. The wives were all given a bouquet of roses from Sis. Haney.

Then it was dismissed and the inevitible Pentecostal conversations began! Lotsof people said nice, true words to my Dad (Yea Dad!), who deserved them all.

My sister & I had a great time catching up throughout the dinner, as well as talking with the J.L. Hall family. It was a good night for the Curry family. (Though we missed Nita and the prodigy.)

Yea Dad!

Generalities

* I ran into fellow group-blogger Stephen Cousino tonight. He had the day off. I was in a meeting from 8:07 a.m. - 4:23 p.m. But I'm not bitter.

* Preliminary indications: The Conference Resolution wanting GC to switch to bi-annual won’t pass because the people at GC are the ones who want GC every year, costs or otherwise. Plus, total costs aren’t total savings (some meetings, etc. would still have to take place somewhere & those will still cost money).

* The people are friendly here. Southern hospitality and all that.

* Does anyone know if the new Switchfoot CD is any good?

The Hotel - kdc

* The Omni - Richmond has free wireless! Booo-ya!

* The Omni - Richmond gives us a free USA Today & Wall Street Journal every weekday.

* The Omni - Richmond's marketing director opened the door for me to depart this morning. Now maybe he was just waiting for someone important & decided to let me out, but still..!

* PART I: The Omni - Richmond's shower water went cold mid-shower, but I was tired & ignored it. Tonight I get into my room after a long day of WAP meeting and there's a plate of fruit & cheese & crackers on my room desk with a "Mr. Kent Curry" printed on it. Now UPCI divisions do nice food things for booth-working employees, & since I booth-work for 2 I assumed that's what I was getting. Nope. It's from Mark, the Omni's Director of Engineering. Turns out the boiler blew and the secondary tank didn't kick in when it should've and I had a cold shower. (Brrr! Now that I think about it, that was an uncomfortable experience.) Mark insists this is not a typcial experience at the Omni. "Please accept this amenity in the spirit of goodwill."

* PART II: Oops! My voice message light is blinking. Hey, it's a voice mail from Mark, the Omni's Director of Engineering! His voice mail apologizes for that nasty shower mishap, and he assures me that this isn't the usual Omni experience. If I need anything, here's his phone number. Mmmm! Strawberries!

* Maybe I'm just easy to impress, but as of today I have a new favorite hotel chain.

The Airport

Oftentimes an airport will tell you everything you need to know about a city.

My flight arrived at 8:30 p.m. last night. There was not one newstand, restaurant, or shop open. Only a handful of maintenance, security, and car rental people were about.

Welcome to Richmond.

withdrawal - rdf

Ok, so I'm NOT in Richmond, VA *sniff*, but I am still live, living vicariously through those who ARE in Richmond.

1. Name/Geographic Location:
We covered this a few weeks back, though not as early as some would've liked *ahem*, but for those just joining us ... Russ Faubert, coming to you LIVE from Troy, MI (try out Google Maps or Google Earth to find me, both are tres cool).

2. Church/Pastor:
Faith Apostolic Church of Troy; Marvin Walker, pastor.

3. Age (choose one):
uncomfortably mature

4. Favorite Bible Character:
Gideon, I think I can relate to him more than any other.

5. I'm currently reading...
Just bought it last night, have begun only the first few pages: The Birth Order Book: Why You Are the Way You Are by Dr. Kevin Leman

6. In my CD player at the moment...
Exodus, a compilation of various artists, produced by Michael W. Smith. Initially released in '97, and largely credited for launching the worship CD sub-genre of Christian music, this version was rereleased last year with 3 new tracks.

7. My General Conference history...
This year joins 1987 (Oklahoma City) as the second time I've missed GC since 1986 (St. Louis). So if I seem a little out of sorts, it's the withdrawal ... i i;v gott the sshaakes so bad I kan vbarely typ3 ,..

Was blessed to attend year after year because the North American Bible Quiz Tournament (known as the NABQT to quiz insiders) was held jointly with the General Conference, and over the years I've participated as a quizzer, coach, and official. As a young person, it was incredibly impacting to be exposed to the leaders of our fellowship, even if only annually. I witnessed great men and women of God powerfully minister, who I never would have had the chance to witness had the NABQT not coincided with GC.

This year, for the first time, the NABQT preceded the NAYC in Columbus (did I just hear a collective 'huh?' from those who attended NAYC but knew nothing of the quizzing? no? sorry, must be the hallucinations from the withdrawal), so it's a little surreal to now be blogging rather than officiating quizzing and attending services in Richmond.

8. At General Conference, you'll most likely find me at...
Ok, can we stop rubbing it in my face that I WON'T be at Conference? That's right, you won't find me anywhere in or near the state of
Virginia, let alone Richmond. So go ahead have yourselves a good time chatting it up in the exhibits, laughing it up in the restaurants, worshipping it up in the services. "Hey, where's Russ? Didn't he make it this year?" "No, what a loser." "Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha." *much frivolity*

9. I'm most looking forward to Richmond because...
... ok, I'm sorry *sniff* I got a little touchy on that last question *sniff* but that's only because *sniff* (as previously established) I
won't be in Richmond *sob* ... I *more sobbing* ... could someone pass the tissues? Ok, that's better; sorry, it must be the withdrawal.

A Little About Me - SJC

A Little About Me

1. Name / Geographic Location:

My name is Stephen Cousino and I live in the Burlington, Vermont area — Milton to be specific, but who has ever heard of Milton, Vermont? I am married to the wonderful, talented (and attractive!) Susan and we have seven children.

2. Church/ Pastor:

I pastor the United Pentecostal Church of Essex, Vermont. I have attended there since I was born-again in December of 1982, and have been the pastor for the last six and a half years.

3. Age (choose one):

comfortably mature

4. Favorite Bible Character:

David, because he had a heart after God’s own heart.

5. I’m currently reading…

Souls on Fire — Portraits and Legends of Hasidic Masters, by Elie Wiesel, On Death and Dying, by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, M.D., and Understandable Statistics (only because I have to), by Brase and Brase.

6. In my CD player at the moment…

Nothing. And I don’t own an iPod. Probably has something to do with being “comfortably mature.”

7. My General Conference History

My first GC was in Birmingham, AL, in 2000. I guess what impressed me a lot was the sheer number of A/P people. We don’t have a lot of A/P’s in Vermont. Between five churches and three daughter-works we probably have under 300 total. I have been to every GC since 2000.

8. At General Conference, you’ll most likely find me at…

In the exhibit area talking with people I don’t see very often (like Kent, when he has time!).

9. I'm most looking forward to Richmond because...

I get to spend a day and a half in Washington, D.C. seeing the sights.

A Little About Me. . . bmyers

1. Name/Geographic Location: Brenda Myers/Winston-Salem, NC

2. Church/Pastor: Heavenview United Pentecostal Church, Pastor Harold Linder

3. Age: Comfortably Mature

4. Favorite Bible Character: I love Hosea and Gomer's story - talk about unconditional love!

5. I'm currently reading. . . I'm going to be the Best Mom Ever, even if it kills me.

6. In my CD player at the moment. . . Christmas musical practice CD.

7. My General Conference history goes back to 1981. I was a poor Bible college student and was asked to work at the Pentecostal Publishing House booth at the Oklahoma City conference. Every conference since then has brought new friends from around the world. I met my husband-to-be in 1995 and we attended the Des Moines, Iowa conference as a "couple". At the time I worked for the Foreign Missions Division, and he was thoroughly grilled by several missionaries concerning his "intentions" with me. It was a bit embarrassing, yet humorous. Jerry was not intimidated and passed the tests with flying colors! My last conference was Louisville, Kentucky in 2001, and our daughter was just 7 months old. This year should prove to be interesting, trying to keep up with a 2 yr and 4 yr old.

8. At General Conference you'll most likely find me in the exhibit hall, catching up with old friends.

9. I'm most looking forward to Richmond because it's close to home and I'll get a few days off work!

(Ok, this is my last attempt to upload my pic. If it doesn't work and you want to see what I look like....sorry.)

1. Name / Geographic Location: Angela Howe / God has seen fit to place me in Pasadena, Maryland

2. Church/ Pastor: The BEST (with no bias, of course)! Antioch, The Apostolic Church / Bishop Chester Wright

3. Age: twentysomething

4. Favorite Bible Character: I don't know if I have a favorite. Everytime I read something new in the Bible, I find people (and characteristics) that I admire. I can relate to the question Mordecai asks Esther "
and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for [such] a time as this?" (Ester 4:14)

5. I'm currently reading... 'Unforgotten' by Kristen Heitzmann. It is the sequel to 'Secrets.' I just picked it up so I can't say if I would recommend it or not. However, if you are as much of a book worm as I am, I would highly recommend the author Ted Dekker!

6. In my CD player at the moment... Either Karen Wheaton or Selah. I, like everyone I have met, LOVE Selah! However, usually I just listen to whatever is on the radio at that time; channel flipping if I don't like that song playing.

My iPod's most played tunes are... iPod...what's that? I'm probably the most technologically-behind twenty-something you will meet. I just got my first cell phone less than three years ago. I don't even own a computer. (Which if anyone would like to rectify, any offerings will be gladly accepted.)

7. My General Conference History: I have been to one or two General Conferences (GC). My most searing memory was the world's LONGEST offering! That thing had to have been between two to three hours!!

8. At General Conference, you'll most likely find me at....anywhere there are people. As anyone that knows me will say, I have never met a stranger. Thankfully, my friends will testify to the fact that I do know how to listen also.

9. I'm most looking forward to Richmond because...I get to see my best friend(s) on Sunday night! Also, I can't wait to see people I haven't seen in the longest time.

A Little Bit About Me - kdc

Group Blogger #1
Unless you're brand new (and if you are, we welcome you and hope you'll stick around forever with the rest of us), you probably know more about me than you want to know.

Still, if you're looking for me (and I'd love to meet as many readers as possible) you can find me in the music area at the PPH booth or the Word Aflame Publications (WAP) Booth. Between the 2 assignments, I'm unlikely to be anywhere else.

My General Conference history is largely Bibe Quizzing-centered, as the first team I was on took 2nd in the Nation at Fort Worth, TX (I won't pretend I had anything to do with our wins, though at 12 the others said I was quite entertaining - and I had my first exposure to Monty Python's Flying Circus.) After I quizzed, I coached, then I became the Youth Field Editor for WAP, then I was hired by PPH, wherein I got to man 2 booths each GC. (Ah! The perks and glory of standing on your feet 14 hours a day!)

I'm intrigued at what attendance will be at this General Conference (after NAYC, Katrina, etc.) and whether this will be a bellwether for the future, as I wouldn't be surprised if GC begins losing its centrality to all things UPCI. We'll see.

Now, I must finish my WAP speaking notes before I fly out tonight.
