More Memories

More memories from Mammaw to my mother: "Cedar Grove School was very close -- half a mile or over and I'd watch both ways coming and going while you walked with the neighbor children to and from school. Some boy would push you in a mud hole and get your wet and dirty. You'd come in again with the same story. One day your daddy said, 'Jewel, the next time the boy starts to push you -- push him in the mud hole first -- or I'll whip you when you come home.' Oh, yes, the next day it happened. You said, 'I don't want to push you in the mud hole, but I have too. Daddy said if I didn't he would whip me when I came home.' The boy never did this again!"

Mammaw writes a lot about Pappaw .... she spent her entire adult life supporting him in ministry. Here are a few snippits:

"We sold our home in the Short Hills (just off Bloomingdale Road) and moved into the parsonage by the church on Gravely. We really enjoyed the nice bathtub and didn't have to pump a well. We were glad to be near the church. We had lots of people to visit us, because they loved us and we loved them. Your daddy drove the church bus, and I would pick up people in our car, go get them and then take them home after church.

"Your daddy preached many revivals. We all went with him when it was close unless you children were sick. We still went to Fairview, Va. (This Bible won't hold the experience we had there.) In our churches and revivals, the saints would give us foot to eat (buttermilk, butter, apples, potatoes, corn, beans, tomatoes, jellies -- so much good food.)

"Your daddy preached his first sermon at Fairview, Va., July 27, 1951 ... preached in front of Beechmont Church because they locked the door and nailed the windows. We used car lights to see by. Your daddy preached, 'Where are you building -- on the rock or on the sand?' Many were convicted of their sins. The next day he preached in the back of the truck under the Willow Tree. (He went to the pond .... and baptized 8 people.) Oh, the mighty hand of God and His power. We all knew Bro. Peters was a preacher, the servant of God. We were so HAPPY. We built two churches, one in Fairview and the other at Kingsport."

My grandfather pastored for more than 50 years before handing the reigns to my Uncle David. He was married for 65 years to my grandmother. He was ordained by Bishop L.A. Parent in 1952, and served in many offices for the Assemblies of the Lord Jesus Christ (ALJC). He helped form the Apostolic World Christian Fellowship (AWCF) and founded the International Apostolic Fellowship (IAF). As chairman of the Missionary Arm of the AWCF, he traveled every continent, 53 countries (not including all the islands he visited), and in his lifetime, visited Israel 30 times. My husband, Jeff, and I were honored to go with him on his last trip. I wrote about our trip in a special series for ninetyandnine.com. I'll post the links below.
