Who Doesn't Love Plantations?

Since I posted some pictures of Longwood and Stanton Hall, I figured I'd post some pictures of a plantation a little closer to home... Nottoway. Nottoway is truly different in design and composition than most plantations I'm used to... and I know a thing or two about them. Although I'm from a swamp town, the area I grew up in was the beginning of the Plantation Trail. Between my house and my high school (in the next town) I passed 3 plantations. In fact, the house my mothers are in sits on land that was once part of LaBranche Plantation... it is itty bitty but has one claim to fame: Hitler's horse is burried there. No one really knows why.

Anyway... here's some pictures of Nottoway:

This is the front of the house. No, the picture is not crooked, the house is sinking. We went a few months past in the bitter cold (for us) to spend some time looking. Although it was pretty, it was miserable! However, there was heat inside, which was wonderful!

This is the gallery where the grand white ballroom is. I love how the sun peeked over the trees and around the side. The husband was a little disappointed because America's Castles (seriously, you should look it up... especially if you love history. It's fabulous!) made it appear larger than it was. I tried to explain to him tricks that can be used to do that, but he was still befuddled and didn't want to hear it. Oh, well.

Although this looks like a shed or a slave cabin, it was actually the study where the kids of the house used were tutored. In its glory, it was a two story building with a grand tower to overlook the river. Between the various owners, it kind of fell to pieces. Sort of sad. This picture has a little bit of a story behind it. As you can see, the sun was beautifully falling over the building. In real life, however, it was completely blinding. So much so, I couldn't even really see the building. I just kind of pointed and clicked, hoping I would get this shot. To my happiness, I was able to in one try! Go me!

Pretty Natchez Houses

I hope you liked my little birdie friend. He was a cutie. Anyway, here are more pictures from the Natchez trip...
Longwood Plantation:

It warmed up considerably by the time we made it out to Longwood. Although I couldn't take pictures of the bottom floor, I have to share with you this: the parlor set was ORANGE! the beds had ORANGE canopies, I was in love! One day, mark my words, I will buy an antique orange parlor set and pretend that I'm all fancy and whatnot. I wish you could see how pretty they were! And proof that Jane Austen is a common fixture in our home - the husband kept calling it Longbourne - one of the houses in Pride and Prejudice!

These pictures originally had tourists littered around the outside of the home, but my photoshopping skills have come in handy to bring you the beauty of the place, undisturbed by tourists in spandex (I kid you not!)

Stanton Hall:

The husband and I saw Stanton Hall on the show America's Castles - it used to be on when I was little and I was obsessed and is now available only on dvd. I made the husband watch it once and he became hooked as well. Anyway, I thought this house was on a lot more land than it was when we went to visit it, but no. It's a little off the beaten path in downtown Natchez, but still very pretty.
Funny story about some of the other pictures I took, but didn't post... the fence is high, really high. Probably more high since I'm so small. Anyway, I wanted to get a picture of the house sans fence, so the husband picked me up about 2 or 3 feet off the ground so I could get a look. There were people walking around that thought I was nuts seeing a little head and camera peaking over the top of the fence... some of the same tourists in spandex at Longwood, to be exact. I didn't think they had any reason to judge me for being short when no man should wear stretchy pants aside from Will Farrell and Jack Black.

Say a prayer that blogger will let me post tomorrow!
