Passover

Speaking of "Everyday Woman," each week's show is available online, in addition to airing on INSP. This week's show features a fascinating explanation about the Jewish Passover, and specifically, its significance to Christians.

On the road (and in the air) again ...

I couldn't blog about this until now because a surprise birthday party was in the mix, but ... just a few days after coming home from a week in Tennessee, I took off at 5:30 a.m. this morning to fly to Charlotte, NC, to attend a surprise birthday tea party for Becky Henderson, co-host of the show "Everyday Woman," for which I edit the website. She turned 30 today and her friends, coworkers and family members gathered at their ministry headquarters' new tea room and conference center for a celebration.

The food was divine: we started with chilled cantaloupe soup and a cinnamon breadstick. It was followed by the main course of asparagus, chicken skewers, cucumber rounds and a Mediterranean bruchetta and a dessert plate of petite fours, caramel creme and a chocolate-covered strawberry. Then there was birthday cake! Oh, and four different kinds of tea.

Tea parties, you've come a long way, baby.

(I'll post pix from my whirlwind trip after I get home.)

I'm now waiting on a flight back home (yes, the same day!) I'll be home about 2 in the morning and will be at praise & worship practice tomorrow at 8:45 a.m. (that is, if I wake up...)

The Father of Unusual Surprises

Here's a quick article I wrote about my dad about eight years ago on ninetyandnine.com. Enjoy!

Dad

I mentioned in an earlier post about my Dad being diagnosed with cancer back in March, following an extended bout of bronchitis and pneumonia. A biopsy of an enlarged lymph node under his arm showed it was malignant melanoma, and a scan of his brain showed some nodules on both sides. A second MRI has now shown that some of those nodules have burst and begun to bleed, so they’ve taken my Dad in immediately to start radiation. They’re undecided whether to do surgery on his lymph node or to start chemo (probably in pill form). I will post updates on his condition on this blog, and please feel free to post comments, prayers and well-wishes in the comments on the posts.

Specifics to pray for are:

• That his hearing will be preserved (he’s lost some of his hearing due to a round of antibiotics he had earlier this year. Now, the radiation threatens to take away more of it).
• That his appetite will increase (he’s lost a lot of weight due to the earlier sickness and needs to eat in order to get well.)
• That the radiation and any further treatment the doctors decide on will be successful.
• Peace of mind (for dad and our family).

We know our God is sovereign and is able to guide us through this, and even heal him instantly if He desires. Thanks for your support and prayers.

Home, and a little Vols fan

Madilyn and I are home now and what a homecoming we had last night. Our plane didn't get in until late but Jeff, Madilyn and Macey the dog (and me!) were so excited to be home we stayed up and jumped and played for a long time. Madilyn and Macey were hilarious. They were so excited to see each other.

And finally, here is our little Lady Vol I blogged about earlier ...

More Memories

More memories from Mammaw to my mother: "Cedar Grove School was very close -- half a mile or over and I'd watch both ways coming and going while you walked with the neighbor children to and from school. Some boy would push you in a mud hole and get your wet and dirty. You'd come in again with the same story. One day your daddy said, 'Jewel, the next time the boy starts to push you -- push him in the mud hole first -- or I'll whip you when you come home.' Oh, yes, the next day it happened. You said, 'I don't want to push you in the mud hole, but I have too. Daddy said if I didn't he would whip me when I came home.' The boy never did this again!"

Mammaw writes a lot about Pappaw .... she spent her entire adult life supporting him in ministry. Here are a few snippits:

"We sold our home in the Short Hills (just off Bloomingdale Road) and moved into the parsonage by the church on Gravely. We really enjoyed the nice bathtub and didn't have to pump a well. We were glad to be near the church. We had lots of people to visit us, because they loved us and we loved them. Your daddy drove the church bus, and I would pick up people in our car, go get them and then take them home after church.

"Your daddy preached many revivals. We all went with him when it was close unless you children were sick. We still went to Fairview, Va. (This Bible won't hold the experience we had there.) In our churches and revivals, the saints would give us foot to eat (buttermilk, butter, apples, potatoes, corn, beans, tomatoes, jellies -- so much good food.)

"Your daddy preached his first sermon at Fairview, Va., July 27, 1951 ... preached in front of Beechmont Church because they locked the door and nailed the windows. We used car lights to see by. Your daddy preached, 'Where are you building -- on the rock or on the sand?' Many were convicted of their sins. The next day he preached in the back of the truck under the Willow Tree. (He went to the pond .... and baptized 8 people.) Oh, the mighty hand of God and His power. We all knew Bro. Peters was a preacher, the servant of God. We were so HAPPY. We built two churches, one in Fairview and the other at Kingsport."

My grandfather pastored for more than 50 years before handing the reigns to my Uncle David. He was married for 65 years to my grandmother. He was ordained by Bishop L.A. Parent in 1952, and served in many offices for the Assemblies of the Lord Jesus Christ (ALJC). He helped form the Apostolic World Christian Fellowship (AWCF) and founded the International Apostolic Fellowship (IAF). As chairman of the Missionary Arm of the AWCF, he traveled every continent, 53 countries (not including all the islands he visited), and in his lifetime, visited Israel 30 times. My husband, Jeff, and I were honored to go with him on his last trip. I wrote about our trip in a special series for ninetyandnine.com. I'll post the links below.

The things kids say ...

I'm still reading through some of the memories my grandmother recorded in the back of Mom's Bible. Here's a good one.

She writes, "Another time you were playing paper dolls with Judy & Jean [Mom's cousins] — having church, receiving tithes and offerings. You girls were shouting, jumping and praising the Lord and clapping your hands. Aunt Kate came visiting about every day (she was my daddy's sister). She had no children, but loved them. She got tired of hearing about church. She said, 'All I hear is church, church.' You spoke up and said, 'Aunt Kate, you're not a thing but a big fat sinner!' You apologized later. I felt like whipping you but couldn't. You were telling the truth!"

Quote of the Day

This is gmail's quote of the day ... funny!

PJ O'Rourke - "Cleanliness becomes more important when godliness is unlikely."

What I love about the South ...

I love food. Especially southern goodies. My wonderful Aunt Cindy made us a springtime Hummingbird Cake. Think pecans, bananas, cinnamon and cream cheese frosting. Delightful. She made is minus the nuts, due to Mom's allergy ... but it's still delicious. What a treat.
